When did you book the flight? American is currently offering "change fees waived" for flights booked during a certain time. They might not refund you, but could possibly waive any change fees so you could use the credit towards "move in weekend" or "parents weekend" or something. It's definitely worth calling and asking.

I just canceled an August cruise.

I also have an August trip planned to a National Park. Other than the flight, a park seems like a good option for not being around crowds and generally a germ factory.

I saw that notice unfortunately I booked before March since I was trying to get a good fare and not wait too long. That sure backfired. I might try calling but I can’t see them trying to help me out:

I booked in February too, trying to get a good rate. I guess I should have waited too. I’m bummed. It makes zero sense for them to offer refunds for travel booked in March but not February.

Work travel to Boston, San Diego, Houston and New York in the next two weeks. Would fly everywhere but New York, usually I take the Acela for that trip but open to flying if that is somehow less risky. My company has encouraged us to rethink "non-essential" travel and says they'll support anyone who feels comfortable traveling right now but leadership seems to consider client travel essential. Feeling very stuck and put in an unnecessarily risky position right now.

Just cancelled a MCPS spring break trip to CA (planes + tourist destinations). Not happy about it, but I’m not comfortable with how this is being handled. I think the CDC is doing everything possible, but the best way to contain is to stay put. I’ve had asthma since infancy so am following CDC guidance to forgo attending religious events. Healthy people are carriers; those of us born with medical conditions cannot rely on “bouncing back.” This is not SARS, this is not fully understood and requires minimizes exposure & risk.

FWIW-i zipline, scuba dive and all kinds of other things. I’m not a “Nervous Nellie” but I think air travellers are being callous (unless their job requires them to travel and do not have paid sick leave).

We’re supposed to go to NYC over Spring break, 1st week of April. Amtrak is offering no fee schedule changes and I’m going to do that as soon as I can figure out when we can reschedule for.

Is anyone worried they will reschedule their trip to a worse time, instead of better?

I’m actively booking new travel. The fares are great. Not canceling a thing. Service workers and towns and tourism industries need the money.

Ok spreader.

Acela has been cancelled starting the 10th until May! Geez.

As for other travel, it’s recommended to cease non essential travel not bc of danger to yourself but to avoid spreading. The more we can cut down on the movement of people the more we can try and slow this thing and buy some time.

But they NEEEED to GOOOOO.

Your point is correct and clear. But for most people, it’s blame everyone else in government and then go do what you want to do.

The only thing I HAVE to do is pick up my kid for spring college break. I will drive, go to quiet, out of the way rest stops, and hope like heck they kill the rest of the semester.

My guess is my husband in tech ends up working from home. At that point, I go stay with my sister near my kid until they kill the semester so I can get there fast. I’m betting the college closes early.
Mine isn’t coming home from UVA. The Dean of students wrote all parents and students three days ago urging all students not to fly overseas or go to places in the US with outbreaks per CDC suggestions and enclosed the CZdC guidelines. She has to work on her senior thesis anyhow. We may drive down to see her.

Are they keeping dorms open? My kid goes to a different university and dorms close for the major breaks.

My kid's university closes dorms for winter and summer break but not spring break -- not everyone travels and going home isn't always financially or logistically easy as so much of the population is from across the country or overseas.

I think just nonstop Acela has been canceled. Regular Acela service is still on.

Me too. I have Los Angeles, Dallas and San Francisco in the next 5 weeks. Leadership is going so it’s not going to look good if I balk.

Yes; you’re right. Sorry for not realizing that!
