How long will the shutdown last?

Doubt it. McConnel has pretty much given all power to Trump. He would be happy to have a dictatorship.

I hope they have a strong contender to run against him in 2020.

Corrections officers from Florida have had to commute 400 miles to the site of the prison since then for two-week stints in their jobs. As of this week, the corrections officers are now doing so without being paid.

And most still solidly back Trump.

Ideological fools.

What other powers does a national emergency declaration give a President? Kind of nervous about what this might mean for checks and balances

Better get ready for the climate change and healthcare emergencies of 2021! Carbon taxes and Medicare for all.

CNN interviewed a prison officer today who said that they are working without pay and because some people are not coming in they are having to work longer shifts - some as long as 16 hours at times. He also mentioned that there has been an increase in attacks on prison guards.

Yes, vice interviewed 4 prison guards. They voted for Trump and are furious, like almost in tears.

Very sad situation. They are being put in danger.

Also the TSA union is reporting that workers are starting to quit and they warn that this could harm airport security

So Trump isn’t President of Democrat’s? If a Democrat says “not my President”, Republicans after? I thought he was President of all Americans?

Trump doesn’t accept compromise. He only accepts deals where he gets everything and they get nothing. He’s had deals before and he rejected them. He does t want compromise. Trump sucks at deal making.

No. He did not get a deal on this before.

Last year, 25 billion for the wall.

What the heck did he do with the 25 billion last year?

He turned it down.

What strings were attached?

Dreamer protections. We don’t live in a dictatorship. Do you know how government w/2 parties works?

Oh please. Sadly, both parties pull this kind of crap all the time. ACA case in point.

Uh....the GOP had the house and the senate for 2 years - why not push it then? Because it's all just a drama he's manufacturing to stir up his stupid base.

+1 I'm so tired of hearing from Republican's acting like the Democrats need to give Trump what he wants and get nothing in return. He didn't get it while the Republican's were running both houses of Congress. Why didn't he shut down the government for the wall last year?

+2 Trump could throw this all back on the Democrats simply by offering something the Democratic base wants and his own base doesn't mind. Infrastructure package or middle class tax cut come to mind, among many others. It's really a pretty simple negotiating tactic. Add a sweetener, and you win. How can Trump not know this?

For the 100th time, he needs 60 votes in the senate. Senate democrats are fillibustering any bill with wall money.

Except he could have had it included in the tax cuts package or any other bill that included reconciliation. No matter how you cut it, Trump is bad at his job. He is an incompetent statesman.

Martial law. Will make checks and balances seem quaint.

That is precisely what makes Trump so different and disturbing as compared to previous presidents, GOP and otherwise. He is completely partisan and tribal; he doesn’t care about Democrats or anyone who did not vote for him. This is something you see with the GOP more broadly at the state level. If you live in a district with a Republican Senator or House rep, they will literally hang up the phone / toss your letter / slam the door if you are a Dem. These aren’t leaders they are partisans.

Such a dangerous time for our country.

Trump is terrible but, to be fair, Democrats do this too.

They don't. Don't bring up false equivalences. Obama never behaved like this.
