If I am hiring you to do my yard care, house work, possibly some home health assistance and transport to/from doctor appts I am most certainly creating jobs. If I put my hard earned money into a long term care community, I am most certainly creating jobs. Eldercare lawyers, estate planning, geriatric physicians, physical therapists, financial advisors, activity directors at retirement centers, oral surgeons, specialists... I could go on. But if you don't think that older people are using their pensions to create jobs you would be very misinformed. |
The kind employees at my mother's retirement community who cook and serve the residents their meals in the dining facility, clean their apartments, do their laundry, offer bus transport to various outings, plan and run activities....you mean those people? |
That's great that you pay someone to mow your lawn every other week, pops. ![]() The real job creators are mid-30s to mid-50s. People who are creating and hiring. The companies who hire people to wipe your bum. You still have your role in the economy, but it's not "job creator". |
^ you are a consumer of services.
|
If I am hiring you directly to come into my home and be my full time aid, I have directly created a job for you. If retirees suddenly decreased by a big number the demand for certain professions would go way down causing many people to lose their jobs. You can argue semantics all you want. The bottom line is, that there are many people whose jobs (and income) are heavily reliant on the elderly to exist. |
Italy's new numbers: 2,036 (+335) positive, 52 deaths (+11), 166 in serious/critical condition and 149 recovered

School closings have started in WA. |
Golly those numbers suck!! |
Yes, there are many consumers in eldercare. We still have the last of the boomers to retire over the next 10 years creating even more eldercare consumers. Maybe once the tiny Gen X starts retiring we will need to worry about those jobs. ![]() |
These are individual reactive closings following one or two people diagnosed with the disease in the schools. Different from widespread school closure as a means of community mitigation. Just FYI |
Unfortunately, if the younger generation doesn't do a better job of caring for themselves, some of them might be sharing the nursing homes with the elderly Gen Xers. But, getting back to the here and now, having the elderly population suddenly depleted would not be good for our economy at all. |
As expected from early numbers. The first cases that would get flagged for testing are likely severe and more vulnerable populations are likely to be affected first. Just like the first deaths here in the US. Don't extrapolate those numbers for greater population - not valid. |
In their own words, they are doing these closings "out of an abundance of caution". In the meantime, the kids are all out spreading it around daycare centers, movie theaters, malls and wherever else the little devils may go. They will go back to a clean school though. |
Go pop a Xanax. The elderly population won't be "depleted". Say we lose 10% roughly using the Chinese data. We'd still have 90% of boomers sticking around to complain about everything. Sadly, the 10% we lose will likely be the ones without "significant wealth" or resources. We're stuck with the old, rich whiners. |
Too bad, so sad for you whippersnapper. Now go bring the car around, I got places to go, things to do! Snap! Snap! |
