The significant role of Jews in social justice movements is well established and the bigotry of one Jewish family doesn’t take away from that.

“Jews” are not a collective mass. Some helped - some were racist. No one wants collective guilt, but everyone wants collective kudos. I’m sick of everyone trying to steal the moral high ground of the African American struggle for civil rights in this country for a totally different context. The left does it and the right does it. The left says “oh the poor Palestinians are just like oppressed Blacks in America” — nope, no they are not. And then people like PP say “oh Jews fought for civil rights, so they are just fighting the righteous fight in Israel” — nope, non sequitur!

Not only that, but it’s irrelevant to the massacre of Jews by Hamas on October 7.

Yes, that’s part of what I said. The left was an analogizing the massacre to Nat Turner’s slave revolt that killed white women, children, etc. That’s totally ridiculous. The victims of chattel slavery in the US had zero recourse to political power or ANY legitimate avenue to resist. The Palestinians have many legitimate avenues, an entire UN agency dedicated to them, powerful wealthy government sending them aid, access to media to advocate, multiple opportunities in political negotiations to resolve the conflict, etc.

Those lucky Palestinians. They have such a kind and benevolent partner in peace in Bibi.

I think it’s very much the opposite. I think the goodwill many had unquestioningly for Israel is forever gone.

This is a genocide.

As time passes, and more details emerge, Israel will forever be branded a genocidal nation. It’s a matter of time before that catches up with them. I don’t think the US is going to stop supporting them immediately but our complicity is another way that US is declining on the world stage.

Biden has already sealed his legacy as genocide denier.

Most reasonable people would react like Israel to an attack like Oct 7. This is actually a pretty measured response. How do you think, I don't know, an Iran would respond? Reasonable people are not "branding Israel as a genocidal nation". The appropriation and hyperbole, wow.

Wow. You think this response is measured? What would an Iran do that is worse? Deploy nuclear weapons?

Probably. Aren't they threatening that right now? ^

Arab officials? The propaganda is getting comical. Officials lead COUNTRIES. Aware that such lies can be denied by any particular country, the NYT is inserting its lies under a smoke screen.

It seems crystal clear that Hamas is a death cult.

Agreed. And it’s irrelevant to genocide of Palestinians by Israel happening now.

not … a … “genocide”

Ah I see. Well if we are speaking relatively. Relative to Palestinian children, Israeli children are lucky.

Hostage negotiatons were ongoing

The hostage situation is terrible, which is what Hamas wants. "human leverage" right?

Nobody on this thread is pro Hamas. Some may be pro Palestinian. Nobody thinks the atrocities of Hamas are ok. The question is how do you deal with the reality of Hamas having de facto control over Gaza.

Some think Israel has to respond by treating Gaza as an independent nation that they are at war with. And that casualties are just something that happens in war. But this is not the situation. You are not dealing with a nation state with resources and responsibilities to its countrymen. You are dealing with a terrorist organization that has gone to ground in a part of your territory that houses an oppressed minority. In the end, you have a larger responsibility to the civilians you are killing.

Very nice. But ultimately says nothing about what Israel should do.

You have asked this question and haven’t like the answer. Ceasefire.

The people comparing Palestinians to slaves are out to lunch. They are also missing some irony with the whole Exodus story...

Oy vey.

I dated a Jewish guy not a decade ago whose parents referred to me (a black woman) in derogatory terms - to their son - so eff off.

Huh?

So don’t “oy vey” the idea that some Jews are racist. Thanks and good bye!

Kind of like the idea that some Blacks are antisemites

Palestinians, keep African Americans' names out of your mouth. We are not props for agenda.
