I think it’s very much the opposite. I think the goodwill many had unquestioningly for Israel is forever gone.

I grew up watching mainstream news, and news about the Israel-Palestinian conflict never made sense. The commentary was always “Palestinians did X, and 90 Israelis died in the fighting. Israel responded and 500 Palestinians died.” Footage would always be of Israeli people, with like a split second of suspicious looking Arab men running about.

I think most people don’t think too hard about this kind of coverage.

Then social media came along. I am seeing instagram posts FROM people in Gaza, describing what is happening. How they can’t shower, how they don’t know where their families are, how children are trapped in the rubble. And so, I think a lot of people are beginning to put some pieces together and are realizing… Israel doesn’t seem like such a “good guy.”

Then of course there is the fact that Israel is described as an ally in the Middle East but we never actually hear about them actually doing anything good or beneficial for the US. We don’t really understand the purpose of utility of Israel.

Then of course we always hear about the billions and billions of dollars that go to Israel while Americans struggle to pay their bills. Israelis have universal healthcare and we don’t.

I think things are inevitably changing.

What is changing? You are sitting on social media absorbing rhetoric while eating fast food bed rotting. You are not the Israeli govt they are going to do what they need to do despite the tik tok brigade.

I guess I hit a nerve. 😂😂😂. Keep it classy!

What is fast food bed rotting? Am I missing out on something?

I THINK he meant that I am sitting in my bed, eating fast food, and rotting. That kind of sounds great to me but alas, is not my life (I am a pathetically striving DC urban mom after all!!)

English may not be his first language?

Strive away, mom. Help make the world a better place!

Definitely forever gone. Even within my own circles- everyone has gone all in for Palestinian liberation and and are calling for an immediate ceasefire. All one needs to do is look at the protests around the world- and even the protests within this country over the past few weeks have been massive. Protesters took over Grand Central Station tonight. I’m sorry boomers, but the narrative has been changing for a while and it’s changing rapidly.

Exactly. Give it a couple of weeks and people will start to rethink things. I did. I’m usually ahead of trend.

I’m betting on a different horse. People are starting to learn more about what Hamas is, and what role it has played in Gaza. A few weeks ago, college kids had no idea that Gaza wasn’t governed by Israel. They bought the apartheid analogy. Now, a few weeks in, people are learning the truth and are starting to question wtf Hamas is doing with all of the money it has (and where it gets it).

Hostages are not free yet. Hamas can end this war, and probably will surrender, after its leaders run to Iran.

People have learned the Israel controls the water, food, electricity and fuel that goes into Gaza. People have learned that Palestinians are fenced in or out, however you want to describe the situation. When you control the basic necessities such as food and water, Israel you control Gaza.

Actually people now realize that Israel had good reason to blockade Gaza. And that Hamas had the money to help Gazans but chose to build tunnels and buy rockets.

Sure Bibi Jr. Are you still at Miami Beach doing PR for dad, while your country goes to hell.

The goal of Hamas is not to preserve the lives of its human shields. It seeks to broaden the conflict to the entire region and make Israel and the US pay for their decades of hostility. The more Palestinian children die on social media, the more outrage it can drum up, the happier it is. It is too soon to tell whether it will reach its objectives, but for right now, I think it's not losing.

Netanyahu's government pays lip service to the rules of engagement, but really couldn't care less about the lives of the human shields around Hamas, and truthfully it cares little for the hostages. It wants total destruction of Hamas, because that pleases its far-right base. An there are advantages to retaliation: already new Israeli "settlers" have taken the opportunity to chase more Palestinian families from the West Bank, with complete impunity. But support from the broader Israeli population is temporary only. Support for a land war in Gaza has plummeted (survey: Oct 19, 65% supported a land incursion; more recently 49% prefer to temporarily halt going into Gaza). Netanyahu, like Trump, desperately clings to power to avoid jail time. He wants to profit off this war to gain some public support and make himself relevant. I think he will fail. Everyone hates him. I saw on French TV some families of Franco-Israeli hostages criticize him roundly.

However, despite public opinion around the world being rather against Israel right now (if you consider the entire world, not just EU and USA), it won't change a thing for Western governments. Ties to Israel run too deep to sever or even reduce. There is intelligence sharing, technology sharing, financial support, close connections at the top-most levels of governments. Western politicians hope that this conflict will be of short duration so the status quo can return (minus thousands of Palestinians, not that they care) and they can keep ignoring the problem.

But if they do... it will only make the next Middle East conflict that much greater. The region's terrorist groups will have gained a lot of ardent supporters, and influential donors.

The reckoning approaches for Israel. Very slowly.

Same same same.
The people that have texted/DM’d and physically whispered about their disgust and helplessness of this situation and sympathy for Palestinians is real. No one feels like they can speak out.

Agreed. When tonight you can catch Al Jazeera live on YouTube and see Guterres’s last-minute plea for sanity and restraint and see the swelling crowds protesting peacefully for Palestinians across the world today, on different open tabs on a smart phone, the world can make a little more sense than what the prior thread reflected.

They’re so close to saying it out loud. Thing is, they don’t need to, people are figuring it out.

I am a DP (I am the fast food bed rotting one) and I think it’s pretty clear that the two state solution is a sham at best. The only real solution is to make the Palestinians citizens of Israel, but Israel will not do that barring some miracle or catastrophe. So the status quo will remain, Israel will keep seizing the West Bank and create an open air prison for Palestinians there. And the people in Gaza that are left will live whatever tragic existence they can.
