Ravenous for the whole day after a hard workout

Anonymous
I exercise early in the morning. When I really push myself, it’s like I pulled a switch and I’m starving for the rest of the day. I can’t figure out what my body is wanting — extra protein? water? Minerals? A good fat? Some sugar, like a banana? All I can think of is those lime Tostitos in the pantry!

Thanks!

This is why I can’t work out in the morning. I’ve tried everything but I’m still hungry. I’m a 7PM runner.

OMG, I signed up for these early morning boot camps a few years ago and I GAINED FIVE POUNDS.

OP here - so maybe it’s possibly because I’m exercising in the morning (empty stomachs?)!! Never thought of that... bummmmmer.

So... fuel yourself. Put back some of the calories you burned off. It's ok to eat. That's what humans do, especially if they've revved up their metabolism by exercising.

I work out at 5:00 every day (slightly later on weekends.) I have a protein shake not long after the workout, and then I have more breakfast when I get to work. I have a healthy lunch around 12. I have a healthy dinner around 6 or 7. I have a few (mostly healthy) snacks available at work for when I get hungry.

Thanks, I do fuel up and it never seems to stop. The cravings are much worse and I can’t seem stop thinking about food...which leads me to overeat.

OP I work out at 6:00 am and go through the same thing. On days when I don't work out I'm not even hungry, but on the days that I work out it's like nothing satisfies me. I make sure to eat like 100 to 150 calories more, but nothing too crazy. I'm still trying to lose weight though.

Without knowing what you're eating, how can we tell you what you're lacking? It could be any of the things you listed. . .

I'm the same way. A light dinner and then I go to the gym. When I work out in the mornings, I have to eat something before so not to get nausea/lightheaded, but then an hour after working am very hungry again and can't seem to satisfy the rest of the day. I eat so much more food .

Are you sure you're eating enough, OP? I have my hungry days and my not-as-hungry days. I just eat more on the hungry days. I figure my body is hungry for a reason.

This board has a bit of a disordered eating tilt at times, so when someone on here is hungry, it's often because they're trying to keep their calories unnaturally low for their build or activity level.

Are you actually thirsty? Do you drink enough water?

This happens to me too. I LOVE working out, but I absolutely lose weight when I stop. I'm just not as hungry.

Exercise doesn't really help you lose weight. Exercise because you like to, or because it makes you healthier, not for weight loss purposes.

WRONG! You absolutely exercise for weight loss purposes because exercise is known to increase your metabolism. Which is why every doctor says "eat less and move more."

Did you just start this routine? If so, your body will adjust

I started taking a new and much harder class (like an intense bootcamp). Normally I'm not a big eater but I get hungry on those days and figure its because of protein synthesis and need to replenish glycogen stores. So now, after class, I make a protein shake with almond butter and that usually helps, as well as get enough fat (like avocado and eggs) the rest of the day.I tend to fuel up on those days and eat lighter the following day.
