Husband threatening to bail out of summer vacation unless I "make an effort"

Anonymous
To drive and know where we are on the road. We live in the suburbs and while I have a valid license, he's been doing the driving because my driving is really bad. Like I've hit a lamppost at 45 mph bad shortly after I received my license. I suspect I have a condition called dyspraxia because I am clumsy and uncoordinated even in my non-driving life and driving with DH only results in him screaming at me. I've already locked everything (i.e. paid) in for our vacation in Europe and can't believe he's saying he won't go if I don't start practicing again. What kind of person threatens his partner over something like this????

Needed a driver.

I don't understand - are either of you expecting to drive around Europe? That's a very different system especially for someone who already admits they're a bad driver on the local highways. You should be taking taxis and public transit as much as you can. It's Europe after all, easiest place to hop on a train between countries anywhere.

Or is he giving you like 3-4 months of improving your driving at home before he rewards you with a trip overseas?

Can you see a doctor about your suspected dyspraxia?

Your husband sounds like a jerk. If he doesn’t want to drive in vacation (is it because he wants to drink?), you should stay in an area with public transportation.

I agree you should do this regardless of the vacatio; however, if you’re going to be driving in Europe you’ll need to be comfortable driving on the right side of the vehicle and the wrong side of the road. No American driving lesson is going to get you comfortable enough for that.

Your husband is a jerk.

Only 4 EU countries out of 27 drive on the left side of the road. The vast majority drive on the right side like we do here in the US.

Wrong side of the road is British Isles only. Good God PP, don't drive in France or Germany.

You are old enough to be married and live in the burbs. You have license. My guess is the the husband is frustrated that thir quality of life is diminished because OP doesn’t drive. Does OP work out of the house and take public transportation? Is Op a SAH mom? The H goes on every shopping trip because the Op won’t drive? Spending more money on Uber’s? How do the kids get around to stuff in the burbs? Is the H anticipating these issues down the road? I really doubt OPs Post is the whole story here. Lots of people seem quick to condemn the guy with few facts.

My son has dyspraxia. You should absolutely go to an OT to get diagnosed and therapy to help you with life-skills like this. Ask the OT if she has suggestions for a driving school.

I agree.

You’re being a complete brat. I don’t really enjoy driving either, especially in unfamiliar places or big cities, but no one really does. It’s completely unfair for you to expect ALL of the driving responsibilities to fall on your DH. Get it together. You’re an adult, act like it. “But OMG I hit a pole because I am just sooooooo clumsy!!!” is not an excuse, princess.

Why not? I always had an easier time of driving in Europe than I do over here. The drivers are much more courteous.
