Wuhan virus (coronavirus) arrives in the USA

This is an interesting thought process. Let's expand. Who gets the beds if we end up overextended? How will you feel if you find out that illegal aliens are getting treatment and, as an American citizen with health insurance, not your wife/father/mother/husband/daughter because there are no beds left?

We are now going to see what open border altruism brings real-time

It's the illegal aliens who are going to keep going to work during a pandemic, planting and harvesting the crops, delivering the groceries.

I like how they suggest that people with coronavirus symptoms call their health care provider, considering that a huge fraction of the population doesn't have one. Europe and Asia has implemented public numbers to be called...Once again, we are behind. Shame on us.

I agree with you. And what really gets me is that our country had the time to prepare for this based on what we saw happening in China, and we have the resources. Yet I’m feeling like the US is not as well-prepared to face this as we should be.

You do realize China said NOTHING for quite a while. This started in China on December 8th.

Actually, a number of experts believe the first cases began appearing in November.

China threatened the doctor who reported the virus. The doctor was required to take backhis words. Sadly the doctor ultimately died from the virus from overwork (before China publicly acknowledged the virus.)

No, they are poor and need to work.

Also they are more likely to be younger, and not in a high risk group.

This sounds like when Russia did not tell the world about Chernobyl. The word got out about Chernobyl only because Finland measured nuclear fallout on their detectors.

How is it relevant that China said NOTHING for quite a while? We've known this was coming for weeks. And we are like, what the hell is happening? Why is the stock market dropping? Oh, people are just panicking for no reason whatsoever. Never mind that one of the most repressive countries in the world and one who is utterly reliant on their factories has implemented severe measures to contain the spread of this illness. That won't come HERE, after all. I mean, people are so crazy and I have to protect my investments!

Seriously, it's like we are so blind to facts that it's embarrassing.

Italy is spreading this everywhere. Jesus.

Countries need to stop allowing Italian nationals into their countries.

Of course, the world is much more reluctant to ban Italians, but can easily ban Chinese and Iranians and would do so for any country deemed as being more ‘other’ and Western Europe does not fit that label.

There’s not even anyone saying people returning from Italy should self isolate. Really though, anyone flying in from much of Europe should be self isolating.

oh shut up.

Let's see, COVID-19 spread out from Italy to:

Spain
Switzerland
USA
Dominican Republic
UK
France
Mexico
Colombia
Greece
Austria
Croatia
Algeria
Norway
Brazil
San Marino

Am I missing others?

But no country wants to ban a European and I bet no one is moving away from "Italian looking" people on the Metro.

You did miss some! Looks like everyone likes to vacation in Italy.

Not sure if this list fully completes yours, but between the two there are thirty countries (ex-Colombia--no cases recorded there yet).

Iceland
U.A.E.
Germany
Monaco
Luxembourg
Czech Republic
Germany
Netherlands
Ireland
Israel
Denmark
Finland
Sweden
Romania
Lithuania
Nigeria

Wow! Yes I missed quite a lot.

And this is only in the past 2 weeks. Somebody needs to tell them to stay home.

The Venito area of Italy gets a lot of mega rich Chinese tourists. There is also a thriving Chinese immigrant population in Milan that supports the Italian fashion industry.

Even better - and these morons are screaming about how well China has done. No, China hid it for quite a while, then went public, and now has gone silent again, meanwhile allowing their people to travel all over, spreading it.

Our western societies are much more open about reporting the news. In Wuhan, social media was locked down so that reports could not get out to the western world.
In China there is no such thing as "free" uncensored internet. It is all censored. The few Chinese that were able to get around firewalls and report were rounded up and have not been heard of from their families.

Seriously, it's like we are so blind to facts that it's embarrassing.

Well, I guess if you hide the fact that you have SARS 2.0 and allow your people to continue to travel globally, knowing the ramifications, it's of no matter...

We didn't know a lot over the past few weeks - rate of spread, how it's spread, how it affects the healthy, etc. We are learning all this as we go along.

We were one of the first to shut down travel re: China. And Trump was called names for his efforts. Per usual. Italy did not, nor did other countries and look what's happened. We at least have a chance, given the size of our nation, to slow the spread.

CDC screwed up Ebola during the Obama era - who's surprised they are screwing this up again? Not me.

True this. China has rounded up the few reporters that have gone around firewalls reporting on the virus. The reporters have not been heard from by their families. China also kicked out Wall STreet Journal reporters for reporting on the virus. Chinese citizens have internet censoring. Those that go around firewalls are routinely rounded up and taken from their families. China also made the key doctor who reported on the virus retract his statements (when confronte by Chinese police)

Seems like fewer developments today?

Not sure why anyone would post positively re: China and the Wuhan virus. China knew about the virus and allowed citizens to get together for communal meal. I think about 20,000 folks gathered for this communal meal and shared dishes to celebrate the Chinese New Year before China released info about the virus.
