When are Herndon Middle and Herndon High going to get a break?!??

Anonymous
On the contrary, kids show up to Herndon schools from CA all the time and are placed in classrooms according to age. If their English is not good, they may be placed a grade or two behind. FCPS believes this is better than having all these children in majority Spanish speaking classes.

It makes sense to move McLean kids to Langley. Langley is in McLean. It doesn't make much sense to ship Herndon kids all the way to Langley, and i doubt those kids or their parents want to do that.

Why are kids currently being bussed 16+ miles to Langley when they live 6 miles from Herndon HS? Please answer this question.

THIS.

Because a boundary change was made years ago to fill Langley and prevent Herndon from being overcrowded.

Imagine the capacity disaster if the boundary had stayed the same.

You can get as angry as you like but kids from GF go to Langley for a reason.

You seem to think the boundary exists just to piss you off but I promise you that in 1994 (98? I just know it was in the 90s) no one was rubbing their palms together and laughing like a cartoon villain in anticipation of your angst a quarter century later.

This makes zero sense. It’s time for the school board to do what is right and adjust the boundaries so that there is equity across the county.

So, what would you do with Langley? Who should go there that would be logical?
Anonymous
This person is not interested in logic. Just getting FARMs kids out of HHS.

Here's a question:

Were Herndon parents complaining in the 90s and early 2000s about how far GF kids had to travel to get to Langley?

Hmmm?

NP here.

I live in Herndon but just don't see any boundary changes. Herndon High is full of kids. Langley is under enrolled. Why would the board move Great Falls kids to Herndon High? That doesn't make any sense. Also Herndon people keeps blindly voting democratic candidates. There is no political need to cater Herndon voters.

Some people keep bringing up a new western high school. First of all I don't think it will happen soon. Second of all if it's ever built in 15 years or so, Herndon will be so over capacity by then and won't have any capacity to take Great Falls kids even if some Herndon kids are moved to the new high school. Remember the only reason to build the new high school is to alleviate the FUTURE overenrollment.

The only hope for Herndon is that the future metro stations may attract more rich people.

They could easily fill a new high school in western Fairfax today from kids now at Herndon, Oakton, South Lakes, Chantilly and Westfield - which would allow FCPS to move part of Langley to Herndon and part of Centreville to Westfield. It might also allow the part of Fairfax that is much closer to Centreville than Fairfax to move there as well.

I’m sure people in western Great Falls or the parts of Herndon now zoned for Langley would like to stick their heads in the sand and pretend this will never happen. But anyone buying in those areas should factor that into their decisions.

The new high school's construction is a matter of time.

How much time is the question, but 10-15 years seems reasonable.

Okay, assuming we had a new high school built and ready today:

1. Langley would be more underenrolled than current status. No one has yet said where the backfill for Langley will come from. They cannot even come up with 300-400 now--where will 1000 come from?
2. South Lakes would be vastly underenrolled and FARMS would once again be a problem.
3. If SB wished to do so, they could send some of Centreville to Westfield now. There is room.

But, the location that has been discussed here is terrible. The traffic from almost all the schools listed would be a nightmare. Have you ever been on Centreville RD/Elden ST at rush hour?

Hilarious for people to claim to worry about the traffic to travel 5 miles in western Fairfax when kids are getting bussed 15 miles now across the entire, congested county.

Sorry, Langley, you will be reboundaried.

They just want western Great Falls to go to Herndon.

It has been a source of resentment for awhile.

I think there's a possibility that Western GF will go back to Herndon in the next decade or two, but whether that results in the much hoped for blending of umc GF kids with alot of FARMs children is another matter.

In 10-20 years Langley and Herndon High School might both be "Langley", and people will complain about that.

It's not the Langley people who are concerned about the traffic. They would not be concerned about rush hour traffic on Centreville Rd. I ask again? Have you been there at rush hour? You do know that is the location they are discussing--right at the junction of Centreville and DTR. No traffic there. I can just see all those school buses holding up traffic while they try to turn left from the only artery that would access a large high school. Accessibility would be a nightmare.

I sitll want to know where new Langley enrollment would come from. Close Langley?
