1. MCPS should have kept childcare open on Tuesday.

2. MCPS should either have delayed opening today, or organized better brining around the schools for this morning's on time opening. The cars slipping around my kids' high school was quite something this morning, in the dark. A delay this morning would have meant more snow to contend with, but also more time for trucks to salt, and at the very least, it means maneuvering in daylight! Which for high schoolers driving themselves to school is NOT NEGLIGIBLE.

That you think that MCPS should delay because a small fraction of MCPS students have their own transport and opt to drive themselves to school in the snow is incredibly selfish. Your new driver shouldn’t be driving to school if you aren’t confident in their ability to navigate inclement weather. Tell them to take the school bus or walk rather than endangering others with their inexperience.

We drove her to school this morning, but I am here to tell you that most parents of high schoolers can't wait for their kids to drive, because it's a huge relief on the household. Don't put this all on the parents. The community needs to react correctly to weather events, and in previous years, such a snowfall would have triggered at least a delay.

High schools have school buses too ya know? You are too good for that I guess.

+1. No one is forcing a MoCo parent to give their child their own car. There are buses or your kid can walk if close enough that a bus isn’t provided.

All the parents at ES pickup today were talking about how thrilled they were that there was an actual full day of school today after the ridiculous delay on Tuesday.

Hopefully mcps learned their lesson on this one. Still waiting for the apology email though.

Sounds like they don’t live where I do.

Your priorities shift once your kids are old enough that you don’t need childcare in order to work. I don’t think the majority of high school parents were thrilled with today’s decision.

There parents at my kids' school were thrilled too. As were my coworkers.

I, too, would like an apology for the years of needless closures. Today proved that we shouldn't be so scared of a little snow.

So rather than you being slightly inconvenienced to figure out the bus schedule or drive your kid yourself, you think all kids should have instruction taken away?

Same here for my ES. Middle schooler got to and back from school on the bus, didn't hear any complaints.

Parent of a HS kid who took the bus with no problems today, as he always does. Only a small proportion of MCPS HS students drive to school. And if your kid can't drive in the snow, take the time to teach them. The idea that we should delay or cancel school when there's too little snow to actually plow, just so some HS kid doesn't suffer the indignity of riding the bus is something else.

Well, yes, unless you have roommates actively posting on DCUM, I guess that would be a reasonable conclusion.

So glad your son wasn’t on one of the multiple busses that got in an accident, Allison.

I have an 8th grader and was happy they got a full day of school in today. No problem at all with bus pickup/drop off.

My kids' bus got into an accident in September--it happens, Karen.
