| How will out of state vs in state applicants view UVA after riots? |
| No affect. Berkeley has gone through eras of protests for decades and still ranks in the top ten of best universities in the world. I would have had no issue with any of my DCs going to Berkeley. |
| But UVA is far from a top 10 national institution on the scale of academic and intellectual achievement? |
| Between the rape culture and racists it isn't the best environment. |
|
I think you could see some small change because this is new for UVA. Berkeley has has that reputation for decades; it may have seen some drop in applications at first.
I won't be sending my (in state) child there because every graduate I know is an alcoholic. But that's separate. |
| Vintage Animal House! |
| I think there is a difference between the protests at Berkeley and nazis making themselves at home. |
| Global takeover of the US by Trump and his Russian associates. |
| Certainly not helping. I have read so many negative things: the rape culture, letting in wealthy kids whose parents make big donations, the murders of Hannah Graham and Yardley Love, and now this. I have also heard horrible things about some of the fraternities from people who go there. I would never want my daughter to go there and it would be dirt cheap as a VA resident. |

It's not going to make any bit of difference, nor has it been. There are PLENTY of qualified kids in VA (and probably even more outside of VA) who would be thrilled to have the opportunity to attend UVA, especially at its price point... riots or no riots.

Wrong. This will definitely affect out of state top student interest in UVA unless of course those students are White neo Nazi supremacists who abhor diversity in preference for apartheid.
UVA may release trend data in future. Stay tuned. |
| Educational Consultant here - seriously, you are not right about this. It will blow over. I have actually pulled all of the data on this. Everyone said the same thing would happen with the Rolling Stone article - it didn't. Or Hannah Graham - it didn't. I could go on. Nothing is making a difference.. and these people are not pro-rape (the applications deadline occurred during the time when everyone thought the article was true) or pro-kidnapping students.. it's just that their desire for a top-name school at a low price supercedes their concern about any of this. |

I assure you Virginians are the only folk who would put UVA on a prestigious and elite pedestal of higher education. She is elite only in her eyes and State.
UVA is no more than a huge fraternity/sorority cabal that will always appeal to the lacrosse toting animal house crowd. |
1. The UVA story was revealed to be a hoax before it had a chance to have an impact. 2. What just happened at UVA is at least as bad as what went down at Mizzou. Their freshman enrollment dropped by 1/3. I'm not saying that will happen at UVA, but don't delude yourself. To most people, UVA is academically closer to Mizzou than it is to UC Berkeley. |
+1. UVA isn't involved. this is about the removal of the Lee statue from Emancipation Parrk in Charlottesville. President Sullivan of UVA has been all over this issue since first announced. She sent out letters asking the UVA community not to return to campus early (no one returns until next weekend). Today she has also been sending out letters asking the community not to engage. The march on the lawn last night was unexpected. The alt-right did it for the powerfulvisuals but there were only about 200 of them. Now they are at the Park and getting dispersed. This has nothing to do with UVA. |
