Will riots/demonstrations affect UVA reputation/applications?

They pick white southern towns with a history of racism.

The same thing happened to Florida. Like Virginia, Florida has been gradually turning blue for years, and is relatively well-educated (by southern standards), but its reputation for "weird" crime stories keeps it a laughingstock.

What all of you seem to be conveniently ignoring is that most of the white supremacists *were not even from VA*. They came from other states to protest the removal of the Lee statue. UVA had nothing to do with it. VA as a whole had nothing to do with it. The sicko who mowed down the girl was from Ohio. If UVA was below the top 30, then yes. but no, it's ranked too high for it to really move the needle.

So - DC is going to be a senior next year in a FCPS school and performing at a level that there is at least 50% chance DC would get into UVA. We prepaid Virginia college tuition for all 4 years. I love UVA - would love to have gone there ... DC not so much. I was going to require DC to apply to UVA no matter what ... now if DC says, "you know, I really don't think I want to apply to UVA" - I won't press it.

UVA is located in a town with a significant amount of Confederate history and tributes. The violence maybe a symptom of the city - and university - moving from an extremely racist past towards a less racist future. Trying to remove itself from its past - growing pains. I think that a good thing but the history is there. Seems silly to deny it. That history brings baggage.

But the rally organizer Jason Kessler is a UVA graduate and Charlottesville resident -https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/individual/jason-kessler. Alt-right leader Richard Spencer is also a UVA graduate. That doesn't directly implicate the school, but it undermines the claim that he march and rally was entirely run by outsiders.

UVA never had anything to do with this. Yes, the organizer is an alum, but no one in their right mind at the school supports such radical, disgusting thoughts. Do all Penn grads support Trump? Absolutely not. The University had no idea this was going to happen on their grounds. The Nazis got a permit for a park a full 5 miles away from the Grounds. They came to UVA without warning to get exactly the reaction that many of you are giving them in this thread. They wanted to soul the campus with their disgusting ideals and make the progressive, diverse school a connection to their movement. It was for visuals and gain and by causing many rational posters on the board to turn their heads against the school simply because of this event, they are getting exactly what they wanted.

And this has nothing to do with "the community of UVA and Charlottesville . . . comfortable enough to host such a gathering." The majority of the people were not from either and there is something called the First Amendment.

Wrong wrong wrong. Ask yourselves why they didn't hold that bullshit rally in Chicago? Or Atlanta? Or any other place?

Umm, because the statue in question was in Charlottesville?? Honestly, I question the intelligence of most of you. UVA did not host this rally; neither did the city of Charlottesville. The neo-nazis came there from elsewhere to protest the removal of the Lee statue. Why can't you people get your facts straight?

Right. Probably because there aren't that many large racist statues in Chicago or Atlanta. What does that tell you about Cville? It has a past. And that past just came calling.

They were in Seattle on Sunday. Just blocks from Amazon headquarters. Hardly a Southern town with a history of racism...

In fairness, they just held one in Seattle. I guess UW is out now?

According to the "logic" of these idiots, any town or college in which these protests occur should be boycotted. Pretty narrow bubble they're living in.

Why not boycott Animal House? I have done so now for several decades. Now just move along dear.

Sadly, there is a lot of present-day racism in the Pacific NW.

Well, you think the White Supremacists just marched here in Charlottesville? They applied for a permit which the city council approved.
