Man, I bet the Crock-pot people are wishing the fire started from a bad iron or something!!

Washington Post did an entire article about this too. I personally think that the fire should've been started by faulty wiring in the house, a curling iron, the dryer... really anything other than a crockpot. It's totally ridiculous- crockpots are very safe.

I've always been manic about unplugging anything that can generate heat - space heaters, hair dryers, toasters, flat irons, etc. Why take chances?

Even without the smoke detector, it appeared the dog was sleeping in the kitchen or close to the kitchen. It should have started barking immediately and would have made Jack come downstairs to check on it.

Good point!

I thought the same thing after watching! That dog would've been going nuts IRL. Dogs don't just sit there quietly when a fire breaks out in their home. This, in addition to the fire being caused by a crock pot of all things, undermines the plot a bit. I mean, how unlikely is it that a crock pot would catch fire? Why not a curling iron or the stove or the faulty wiring they've been hinting about? I love the show regardless, but I wish they paid closer attention to details.

Dad, is that you? Every time we got in the car "Is your hair dryer unplugged?" "Is your curling iron unplugged?" But now I'm like that, too.

The old guy that gave them the crock pot in 1980 said that it had already been used to cook many family meals. Given his & his wife's apparent ages, that makes me think that the crock pot was probably supposed to have been from the 1950s or '60s. Maybe the ones from back then weren't as safe?

No, it was the crock pot. It had a faulty switch. The faulty wiring in the house that they had been alluding to over the past few episodes had nothing to do with the fire.

Why would the writers put this on Crock Pot?

Me, too! I always figured I was a little neurotic for double-checking that I unplugged things and for not using the crock pot or dryer when we weren't home. I've been like this for years.

The Twitter account for the This Is Us Crockpot is pretty funny. "Hey now, let's focus on the 17 years I provided the Pearsons quick meals with minimal preparation and not that whole fire thing at the end. #ThisIsUs"

Haha, me, too! I've run back into the house more times than I can count to double check that the hair dryer or straightener that I was pretty sure I unplugged was, in fact, unplugged!

I thought he said it was only two years old.

I am still tearing up over the show!! the scene w/ little kate rewatching her dad's expression and pride towards her in the video!! OMG, the true unconditional love that parents have for their children. Kate so full of pride finally understanding how beautiful her dad thinks she is. ughhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Nvm, thanks to the crock pot's twitter accoint, I just realized that I was misremembering what the old guy said. Apparently the crock pot was only 2 years old when he gave it to the Pearsons. What couple with no kids still at home buys a new crock pot???

I'm just glad that the cute elderly neighbor who gave them the crock pot was most likely dead by the time it caused the fire. Imagine the guilt he'd have felt if he had been alive to hear about it!

(yes, I know neither the neighbor nor the fire are/were real...)

I must have missed the crock pot scene. When was that?

FFS, I missed the crock pot scene, I missed the smoke detector scene, I missed the scenes from next week. This thread is turning into a rehash of all the stuff people missed.

I missed a whole episode!! ARGH!! I thought they aired on Thursdays.
