Dear middle-aged women: capri pants do nothing for you.

Right? Now people call them “ankle length” or “cropped skinnies” and they’re really just capris

I was the original poster of this thread a decade ago. I have aged, matured, grown...

I don't wear capris- yet!- but more importantly, I no longer care what others wear. I renounce my judgment of your favorite knee-covering, shin-exposing pants!

Thank you OP, apology accepted.

I also think of this thread when I first pull out my capris in the spring. Seeing how most pants are above the ankle now, I like to think we capri lovers were just being fashion forward 10 years ago.

I'm still wearing the same pairs of capris I had 10 years ago. Comfortable and durable! Ha!

LOL. Thank you for starting this thread lo those many years ago, OP! I think of it often when I get my capris out for summer. And in fact this weekend I was wearing capris and caught a glimpse of myself in a mirror in a store and thought "OMG that DCUM capri person was right all along, these look horrible on me, wtf have I been thinking wearing these around?" (I'm not being snarky here, this is actually a true story!) I mean part of it's I'm also a decade older and have to work harder now to look put together and part of it was those particular capris were super schlumpy but...as you have revolved to acceptance, I have gone to the other side of the wheel and accept your original wisdom. *bows in homage*

+2. Yeah, it was nice that OP came back with a mea culpa and all. BUT. Of course she was right 10 years ago. I don't disagree with the OP with respect to the aesthetics, but I guess I just don't DGAF about aesthetics over 75% of the time.

But PP, I just walked by a store window wearing cropped pants today and thought d@mn, I did not even realize how unflattering these are. (And they were cropped leggings.) Won't stop wearing them, but yeah, I admit, not exactly absolutely fabulous over here.

I was skinny in my 20s and wore capris. Looking at those pictures now makes me cringe.

I think the only person who could pull it off is Audrey Hepburn. She had the built and the poise. For the vast majority of people, it's not a flattering look. The absolute worst is khaki or chino capris.

Petite grandmas look great in them too

I’ll say the inverse of PP...when this thread started, I still looked good in capris. With my menopausal weight gain, I no longer want to shove my legs into two pegged tubes.

I think guachos can look very nice and stylish! Not sure if I thought that when I made this thread, though.

Like the daffodils coming up, this thread heralds the return of warm weather!

I laughed at it 10 years ago when I was only 41 and still had a rockin’ body thanks to genetics, working out, and a pretty easy life to that point.

Ten years later— well, it’s been a lot. Life’s been hard. It catches up with all of us. I still don’t shop at Chicos and I don’t ever see myself wearing mid-shin capris, but at this point in my life I really don’t care what anyone thinks about what I wear.

I still disagree ... if you are doing something like a spring break trip to Disney, or hiking with the family, touring Yellowstone, etc., this is a totally legitimate choice and will often look more put together than some of the other options, particularly with a high quality tee and the right sneakers or sandals. It's a sporty, athletic look, that looks really good on some women in some contexts:

Gauchos are pretty much my favorite summer wear. I also like them in fall with boots!

I LOVE THIS!!! Thank you for coming back OP. This thread should be locked.

Not locked but stickied. (Our moderator was indicating the other day he is rethinking the whole idea of stickies.)

I wore these the other day and had a moment like PPs where I saw my reflection and thought wow, these are not doing anything good for me.

That said, I think it's because I was wearing flats. They look a lot better with a heel of some sort

I'm now middle aged and 10 lbs overweight* and I feel like the issue is that many of us middle aged women are just not considered attractive, so nothing we wear will look great. Im at the point where my non-work uniform is a t shirt and bike shorts or cropped leggings because if I can't look grear, I might as well be comfortable.

*yes I KNOW I should lose the weight but a) it's hard! And b) medical stuff has gotten in the way this spring.

+1. It all looks the same on middle-aged bodies unless you’re super fit. I am not. So I just wear what’s comfortable.

Anonymous wrote:OP, capri pants look much better than shorts. They look very chic on slim people.

If you think that women in their FIFTIES look better in short shorts than capri pants, you need your head examined.

Besides, why do you care?

Agree with this - I love capris and don't care what other people think
