I have no issue with helping out those who might need it in these tough times. I hope so many teachers benefit greatly and can use that boost for something else they need or want. This decision makes me happy.

Exactly. It seems like many nowadays don’t want any good for others unless they personally benefit. I was very happy for the child credits during the pandemic even though I didn’t benefit from it. It’s like people have turned their backs on “the common good”.

Health care than paying for an UMC persons tuition. A 25 year old making 120k gets this. That’s a lot of money for a young person but they are eligible. If it were means tested or connected to public service then maybe. But this is just a give away.

But you are voting for a party that is firmly against it and is trying to repeal the ACA. You are full of it.

A lot of republicans are in favor of universal health care. But we won’t push it until the borders are secure because our country cannot afford to provide health care to the world.

If they were halfway honest about the student loan mess, they would claw back funds from colleges that have a disproportionate amount of borrowers that cant pay back their loans.

I have a good friend who was similarly benevolent because she felt she could afford the tax increase Biden had proposed before he was elected. And she was ok with this type of thing too. Until inflation hit and her husband lost his job. He got a new one but not as good and they had to move so now they have a new mortgage and higher interest rate. It is EASY to be benevolent when you can afford it but you are being self centered in thinking that all of us can. I made decisions about where I would go to school based on tuition and the amount of loans I would need. I made decisions about the jobs I took and my
Living situations based on my debt. That is how it is done. I had to have roommates in my late twenties while at Big Law to pay for my degree. I did NOT take loans and then expect others to pay for them. It is so irresponsible and selfish. And Biden is flat out paying for votes. He is a grifter.

Honey, you don’t know the first thing about me. Biden is not paying for votes. He is fulfilling a campaign promise. Similar to how the GOP campaigned on taking rights away from women.

So did my adult child who is a teacher making less than 60k/year living with roommates in the DMV bc they can't afford housing on their own. They received plenty of scholarship money and chose the least expensive school (which, with scholarships, was less expensive than their state school) and they still needed student loans to get through four years. To have most of their debt forgiven is a massive help to a new teacher. So stop being so sanctimonious and recognize that the cost of a college degree in this country and the decision to TEACH very often leaves people with a huge burden. And yes, they could teach in a public school riddled with poverty and get loan forgiveness after teaching for 10 years...but how about cutting educators (and others doing essential good work for low pay) a break? You know, like multi-million dollar businesses have long gotten!

I would be on board with it for teachers or others in public service. But it isn’t that precise.

I bet you would hear zero complaints if Biden did this for teachers or police. But not across the board. That isn’t fair. I know kids on student loans whose families have multiple homes and they went to private school. Parents decided to spread out the cost of college but the parents are going to pay the bill. So they get 10k gift. Can use it to tune up the Boston Whaler or go to Costa Rica! Nice.

Same. I paid 1k a month for 3 years towards my loans the first few years out of undergrad while only making 75k. I was trying to do the right thing and be responsible. Didn’t travel the world and eat out every day like my peers were doing. Now they’re rewarded for their profligate financial decisions. Voting GOP 100% this midterm

Yes, the revenue shortfall associated with these loans will either be made up through other tax revenue, or additional borrowing, which itself has to be paid for either through new taxes or currency devaluation.

This is awesome, DH and I have a combined income around 225k and 40k of outstanding debt. If the 10k forgiveness happens we might go on a nice trip somewhere and stash the rest in a brokerage.

Neither did people whose debt is being forgiven. You think an entire generation and a half went to college solely because they expected some President in the future to cancel their debt? Seems you're just bitter that other people are getting something you aren't.

This move:
- will increase inflation
- will increase tuition costs
- will be given primarily to middle class and grad students
- will be felt most by middle class taxpayers who decided NOT to go to college and take out loans
- will teach these recipients that contracts can be ignored
- will only result in the far left demanding even *more* loan transfer .... just wait. This is a dry run.
- will send a message to future borrowers not to worry about paying off your loans... they will eventually be paid off by the tax payers when a Democrat needs to buy votes.

I hope this goes to court and it is determined that what Biden is doing is illegal.

The bulk of the forgiveness is going to Pell recipients! Additionally, they are forgiving only $10k. If you owe $91k, like I did at one time, $10k is a drop in the bucket. It’s like forgiving the interest.

You are taking your small sample of folks you know and extrapolating it to EVERYONE that will benefit from this decision. And I can give you at least 26 examples of people I know that were also responsible, did not travel or eat out and have constantly struggled because of these loans. My point is not that My examples are more meaningful that yours, but that we shouldn’t be judging everybody through our limited lenses.

As for myself, I have paid $82k of my $85k balance. I’m 36 and I’ve been on two vacations since graduating college. My dad insisted I reward myself for working so hard. I refused to do so until these loans are gone. But he paid for me to come on those family vacations. I work three jobs (one full time and two part time). I can do that because I chose not to date and have kids. So I have more time on my hands. But I know people who have kids—some with special needs that couldn’t do the whole abortion thing and the amount of financial resources it takes to care for a child and one with special needs. I can absolutely understand why some people need this help… and the amount of money our government spends of useless programs and that 20 year unnecessary war, it’s about time real middle class families get some help.
