What is going on with student loans?

Conservatives want us in a race to the bottom. I fail to see how any of this is a great thing.

This is exactly what needs to happen. There is insufficient market forces to dissuade people from going to six layer directional universities and dog crap private schools. These kids need skills that will make them productive. Not a four year holding tank of compete BS.

All the liberal professors are in on the gig too. Let’s get them to do some real work. We have an infrastructure problem. Have them build the bridges and actually be productive for once.

+100
Youngkin has now removed a degree requirement for most state jobs. Good move.

The problem is y'all raising your kids to think these type of jobs are beneath them. Then, we don't want to pay decent wages for some of these technical jobs.

Pay is what the market will bear. Why do you hate capitalism?

I think you completely missed the point. I wasn’t speaking only to vocational type jobs - most of which are very lucrative if you any amount of business sense.

75% of college/“university” education in the US is a complete waste of time. None of what these kids are learning helps them with their “college educated required” careers. And, that isn’t “gate keeping.” Nobody needs a college education to do most white collar jobs these days. You need to know how to operate a computer and not be an idiot. As it turns out, our education system seems to promote being an idiot and having a distinct lack of any critical thinking skills.

We are living in idiocracy. I’m wondering then the brawndo is going to show up in drinking fountains.

The most expensive instate public universities (highest instate tuition & highest average student debt among grads) are ALL in liberal Democratic states. NJ, PA, CT, ME, VT, RI, NH, MA and IL. Funny how that works!

I can’t wait for all the entitled borrowers to start feeling the pressure again.

I am looking forward to starting the payments again to be honest - just to get it off my plate, and the interest rates are low anyhow. But, I took out a reasonable amount of loans for an education that has afforded me a very good living. I think I borrowed a total of $60k for the end of engineering school and for the entirety of law school. I guess I was lucky that my costs were so low, but I was also intentional. Crazy that thought.

Enjoy yourself, I didn't pay my $1200/month loan payments since 2020 and just had them discharged through PSLF. I'm going to savor the only financial benefit ever given to Millennials.

When was this? 40 years ago?

Google how much T14 law schools, the only ones you’ll get a half-decent job out of, cost.

What is this, autoadmit? It was 15 years ago. You do realize you can get money at “T14” schools, including LAW CENTER? You can also get a first year job at a place like Kirkland coming from the stench of a non “T14” school like American. You can also be a student associate if you have an engineering or science background, often having your tuition paid while working. It sucks, but it’s possible. All of these things still exist as they did when I was in school.

Thanks for the google tip though. I’m not already surrounded by all of this. Especially since I’ve been involved in recruiting the entire time I’ve been in the big law firm environment.

I don't hate capitalism. I'm thriving in it. I'm just saying that many Americans don't really want to do these jobs anymore. I've heard a number of people say this--in both blue and red states.

The problem is y'all raising your kids to think these type of jobs are beneath them. Then, we don't want to pay decent wages for some of these technical jobs.

I think this is telling that Biden may not be THAT interesting is taking student loans to the mat. This is Biden's auto text response today, note the omission of student debt / student loans:

"On another note, let me know what else is important to you by texting back with as many of the numbers below as you'd like. This way, I can keep you updated on our work moving forward.
1. Economy
2. Climate and Clean Energy
3. Infrastructure
4. Health Care
5. Gun Safety
6. Reproductive Rights
7. Racial Justice
8. LGBTQI+ Rights"
