The Solano County woman has puzzled health officials, who say they have not been able to trace where she contracted the virus.
She’s the ONLY one still in the hospital.

The only one that the hospital forced the CDC to test that's still in the hospital.

My point is we’ve had no deaths.

I agree that is encouraging. Have we had any US Citizen deaths abroad from COVID?

Yes, in China. It was a week or two ago?

? It’s been a long coverage on this topic- why is that person visiting infected areas.

+1

Why are flights from the infected regions coming in still?

It is encouraging since a death will mean, statistically, that either she's really unlucky and had a 2% chance of dying and died of the disease or we have another 49 individuals with COVID-19 that haven't been identified.

Apparently a whistleblower said the folks evacuating the Corina patients there were not properly using correct protocol. My guess is someone from that base is now a carrier and that is how this woman got sick. She someone crossed paths. They need to work backwards and test all those workers. I can see now why people are upset about setting up Corona patients in their town because you have to make sure the workers are following correct protocol.

Who said no ties? I only hope the person was truthful.

Anyone know the person's age, whether or not they were a smoker and how long they had been in China?

She was in her 60s and died in Wuhan at one of the hospitals at the epicenter of the crisis on 2/6.

Also, it seems to be spreading faster than the normal flu. Is this true? How is it spreading faster?

I've been wondering the same thing. For some reason they are leaving smoker/non-smoker off of these stats.

Someone said something about this on NPR yesterday. I think it was 50-80% of Chinese men smoke, and older ones especially, and they are dying. Fewer women smoke, and they are not. This was along with a conversation about how children are less affected (in # and in severity) and that may be related to built-up immunity (i.e. they get more colds so are more ready to fight this off). All speculation. But by experts.

Don’t buy into the smoking theories. Sure it makes one feel better I guess. The problem is no smokers vs non. It’s containing this virus

Saw an elderly person in mask and gloves shopping for groceries. It was strange n
And I felt bad for her. She was rushing around trying to do it as fast as she can. I hope she got what she wanted and can rest.

Of course, the death rate is based on the assumption that all infected people are identified. There are people who are mildly affected and more severely affected. What are the odds some people have zero sign of the virus? Perhaps they have immunity derived from past exposure to one of the other corona viruses (there are a number which are around us all the time and nobody has ever worried about).

As for the woman in California--you can't really extrapolate from one case how many others are out there no matter how certain you are of infection, morbidity, and mortality rates. Just like tossing a coin -- if it comes up heads, doesn't mean the next one has to be tails.

Are you a smoker by any chance?
