Right, that's what I mean about in connection with the quarantine. While they may not be able to trace the exact route, it seems obvious to me that it came from the base.

Really? A traveler with a mild case seems more likely to me. That’s how it has in the rest of the world.

"No known contact with infected individual"

They have no way of knowing this except for the patient's word. And that person has no idea either.

Thus the words “no known”.

...
Patient is intubated and on vent so I doubt he has said much of anything. It probably just means that he hasn't been to Asia recently and, as far as his family knows, he hasn't been hanging out with anyone with the virus. I'd be curious what his job is...if he works in a big S.F. hotel, that's pretty different from a situation where he works in a vineyard, or in an office in Sacramento.

Or a wine tasting room, or a fast food place, or a big box store, or a craft brewery...,

I really wouldn't worry about this "patient 0" He was just the first guy to get tested. There's probably much spread in the community. Probably he got it from his grandkid or from the guy delivering the groceries..... there's no point in specifics, just find out how much spread there is overall. Are we in week 3 or week 5 of the outbreak?

It's obvious that he got it in connection with the quarantine at Travis AFB in Solano County. I'm not sure why this is even up for discussion.

Which makes the attempt to move the quarantined people from Travis to Costa Mesa last weekend look more suspicious - as in, DOD got wind that there might be a break in the quarantine and they said, get those people out of here.

Maybe, maybe not. I do think it's important to have appropriate quarantine facilities, and Costa Mesa is being churlish not to pitch in. This is a national/global thing and if we don't all do our part, we won't be able to handle it.

Disagree. The alabama location made a lot more sense, but trump took it off the table for political reasons.

Disagree. We know there are dozens of cases in Solano County - at the AFB and the Solano Couny hospitals. The overwhelmingly logical inference is that the patient at UCD got it that way.

I don't know the details of the suitability of the locations, but the idea that this is being litigated is just crazy and bad.

Adults who were exposed to those viruses as children may have seen that immunity wear off. (Or something like that.) The podcast is worth a listen.

What about all of us parents who have also been slammed with colds over the past couple of winters. Maybe that means we have a bit of protection too vs. a childless adult who doesn’t come in contact with kids often?

I’m just trying to grab onto some hope here ...

What I think is most likely is that because the base was nearby, this particular patient with severe pneumonia was able to get tested. You need to have a link to known cases, and doctors perhaps were able to convince the CDC to test because the base was nearby.

It’s like with that first 38 year -old in Italy a week ago. He was finally tested because he remembered he had had dinner with somebody who came from China a few weeks before that. But it turned out that man who travel to China actually never had the virus! But he’s the reason the Italian guy got tested

If that's true then it must be all over the United States. Great.

It's not good. Last night Trump was insisting that it wasn't spreading and was outright lying saying only one new person caught it in the last two weeks. The career CDC folks said it's going to spread so prepare. Anyone Trump appoints spends half their time kissing his butt. It's really annoying to watch.

Trump says all is fine!

“Caronavirus” he calls it. Ugh.

Yesterday, he couldn’t say quarantine.....sad try too. So embarrassing.

Very sad try. It’s embarrassing.

BNO is reporting 4 new cases in Japan in the past hour... 4 separate cities... unclear how any of them were infected.

Remember Japans hospitals are filled with many elderly Diamond Princess passengers. And it’s been two plus weeks. They are reporting many cases in serious condition.

This was why I predicted Japan would be closing schools by now, and in fact they have. I know I am guessing that they will start shutting down some of the most heavily affected cities.

PP again. Because hospitals and health care workers can see from their current severe cases how much they can’t handle even a doubling of such cases... not to mention a tripling or quadrupling.

Japanese is suppressing testing and reporting because they are worried about the Olympics. (Source: friends on ground in Japan following testing and public awareness campaigns or lack thereof.)

But the cat is out of the bag now. Schools there are closed and lots of other nations have cases too. Time for Japan to start testing and monitoring. Expect many cases there.

So are we but because Trump doesn't want to be embarrassed. Source, CDC testing practices.

Iran has given up. Even if the whole world contained and stopped it, Iran would be a boiling pot of COVID-19 spilling over back into the world. It was already likely uncontainable since asymptomatic people are contagious but Iran ensures it.
