"No known contact with infected individual"

They have no way of knowing this except for the patient's word. And that person has no idea either.

Thus the words “no known”.

...
Patient is intubated and on vent so I doubt he has said much of anything. It probably just means that he hasn't been to Asia recently and, as far as his family knows, he hasn't been hanging out with anyone with the virus. I'd be curious what his job is...if he works in a big S.F. hotel, that's pretty different from a situation where he works in a vineyard, or in an office in Sacramento.

Or a wine tasting room, or a fast food place, or a big box store, or a craft brewery...,

I really wouldn't worry about this "patient 0" He was just the first guy to get tested. There's probably much spread in the community. Probably he got it from his grandkid or from the guy delivering the groceries..... there's no point in specifics, just find out how much spread there is overall. Are we in week 3 or week 5 of the outbreak?

It's obvious that he got it in connection with the quarantine at Travis AFB in Solano County. I'm not sure why this is even up for discussion.

I wasn't freaked out before, but after listening to that podcast, I'm very concerned.

OMG what if that happened here? I don't have a month of annual leave. Would we all just be taking LWOP? Would they be more lenient and let us telework at night or with small children at home?

Seriously, if school closed your work would close and no one would be keeping tabs on your pto. Everyone would be freaking out, but you probably wouldn’t get paid.

This would be a huge issue for most people. I’m not saying closures aren’t a reasonable measure. But the government is going to have to come up with someone to avoid people going into foreclosure, not being able to buy groceries, etc

I’m a fed and wonder if the government would stop paying us? If there were an outbreak in the DC area and Feds stopped getting paychecks (without back pay like during shutdowns) this could really hurt the region

We'll all telework. If they can force us to telework during weather closures, then they can have us telework during public health closures.

They don’t have a lot of cases.

I’m sure this is an attempt to keep the olympics on track. They need to try to shut it down like China or no Olympics

Many countries have closed schools or not reopened after lunar new year break.

China: all schools closed
Hong Kong closed
Taiwan closed. Trying to reopen this week but very strict rules on closing of 2 kids are infected.
S Korea I believe has closed
Singapore closed
Italy has closed schools in two states.
Japan closed only in affected areas. Now closed countrywide.

The worry is that it will return with a vengeance in the fall, before a vaccine is available. That’s what happened with the Spanish Flu of 1918. Started in spring, died down, came back in fall and winter on a widespread basis.

I worry this is a very real possibility. Just imagine how overwhelmed the hospitals would be dealing with both widespread flu and coronavirus cases.

Right but that is usually a day or two. Most parents have at least a day or two of annual or credit leave for snow days (or swap off which parent takes leave). Expecting employees to telework for a month or two when schools and daycares will also be closed is going to cause tremendous hardship for a lot of families.

I can tell you I’m certainly not taking LWOP during a major public health crisis. I still need a paycheck and DH and I would just have to do our best to get done work done with small kids in the house. It would be beyond stressful and our productivity is going to take a huge hit.

Which makes the attempt to move the quarantined people from Travis to Costa Mesa last weekend look more suspicious - as in, DOD got wind that there might be a break in the quarantine and they said, get those people out of here.

Maybe, maybe not. I do think it's important to have appropriate quarantine facilities, and Costa Mesa is being churlish not to pitch in. This is a national/global thing and if we don't all do our part, we won't be able to handle it.

Why would they report that he had no known connections if he got it from the base with the quarantine? More likely someone else got it from the base then spread it around to various people including him and now it's not controllable. Now if he's say, a janitor on the base then fine I agree but they haven't said anything like that.

Right, that's what I mean about in connection with the quarantine. While they may not be able to trace the exact route, it seems obvious to me that it came from the base.
