Arrests for 'spreading rumours'

Just like the USA! If we don’t test, then no one has it! Nothing to see here! We are the greatest! |
Can't remember if I've seen this to a level of specificity, but if we try the quarantine route does that mean indoors only or stay in/on your own property? I know it's a level of detail we probably won't see, but part of me is thinking how delightful it would be to be told to stay home for a few weeks and be able to sit outside and enjoy spring! (yes, trying to see a bright side) |

^^ I have a really hard time imagining large-scale quarantines in the US; I can imagine recommendations of staying away from large activities along with school closures and recommendations to work from home. I have actually been wondering if, say, my own kids could shoot hoops (with just each other) in our cul de sac or if we could take a bike ride. I already work from home, so am in a very fortunate position, but having three kids at home and potentially my husband working at home too would be a lot of togetherness with no exercise. |
If people with no known risk factors (no international travel, no close contact with international travelers) are contracting this virus then who the heck do you test? If you are concerned about Coronavirus assume that *everyone* has it and exercise prudent caution. You can't go around testing at random and then forcing people who test positive to undergo weeks long quarantine while the lucky ones who are tested are allowed to live their lives. That isn't containing the virus or preventing it from spreading - that's just giving people a false sense of security that something is being "done" about it. For most of us, this will be a...cold. Assuming we even catch it because we are all going to be super careful to wash our hands and avoid touching our faces, right? |
^aren't tested |
There's a difference between quarantine and social distancing by closing schools & work. If you're quarantined (as in, actually have the virus or exposed) then you would have to stay home. I think the more likely thing to happen is that school and public events would be cancelled and people would be told to telework. In that case, you can go outside. The virus isn't going to really be contagious out in the open assuming you're not in a crowd. |
Sheesh. Let's leave this to the experts, shall we? Symptomatic people can be tested -- those who have pneumonia unexplained by influenza. At some point, they can start testing people with any respiratory symptoms, or treating them as if they were coronavirus. Asymptomatic infected people likely aren't that contagious. So it's not about "fairness" but rather targeting efforts to people who are mostly likely to be infectious. |
I think that's probably true. The minuscule number of people we are testing seems almost intentional to say "it's not here, don't worry" |
If someone gets sick and presents at the hospital/Urgent Care/there doctor's office with symptoms of pneumonia - absolutely check them for the virus just like you would the flu. But don't try to hunt down every person that has had recent contact with them. It's a pointless waste of resources to do that because most of them won't get sick and the ones that do will seek out medical attention. Don't make people afraid to seek medical attention by threatening to quarantine everyone that they know. That is not going to help matters. |
Right, you can't do the same sort of "contact tracing" with widespread community transmission as you can with isolated cases, like we have now. But you certainly can test family members and ask them to self-quarantine. For example, if the wife of the patient works at a daycare or dr office, I don't think you want her going to work. |
Agree! Listen, if you knew your city had 2,000 infections, wouldn't you take a little shortness of breath more seriously? Avoid crowds more? Maybe telework? By not testing, we are not sharing information that healthcare workers and citizens can use to make good decisions. The USA response seems to be, "Nothing to see here!" because they don't want to stop the economy from rolling. It might be better to have a few tens of thousands of people dead so long as the economy is good. I'm sure that's the kind of calculus the administration is making. |
I took a day off today and stocked up. Shelf stable, frozen stuff. I recommend you do too before it becomes the snowpocalypse equivalent of grocery store chaos. |
