Wuhan virus (coronavirus) arrives in the USA

"Outside of China, more than 40 confirmed cases have been identified in about a dozen countries."

That's a lot of spreading around of this virus. Though the numbers aren't up (yet) that much outside of China, just the potential exposure worries me.

I need a cup of coffee.

Just found out that a group of exchange students just arrived from China and will be attending my kids school for the next two weeks. They are staying with students families.

What the hell?

Do we know this?

We are pretty sure a number of people have. Viruses like this present with a spectrum of severity. There likely have been many mild cases in China that people recovered from, thinking they were just the common cold. They were not tested so we do not know for sure.

I have not seen anything on survival rate once it progresses to pneumonia, the point at which most people would likely first contact their doctor. It's too early to tell.

Pretty sure is not the same as solid data. It is weird that nobody is posting any numbers of people who got well,
one would think it would be something to brag about right?

Lancet analyzed the first 41 cases:

6 died (death rate for sample = 15%)

5 (presumably survivors) developed acute cardiac injury

4 (presumably survivors) required mechanical ventilation (altogether a third of patients required this; likely includes those who died)

Chinese tourist says she evaded coronavirus checks to fly to France

"The woman told on social media how she took fever medicine to mask flu-like symptoms to bypass temperature checks. Wuhan has temporarily shut down public transport to contain the deadly virus.

She wrote: “I had a fever and a cough before I left – I was so scared. I quickly took some medicine and checked my temperature. Luckily the temperature was controlled and I had a smooth journey through the border.”

Authorities were alerted to her post after it was criticised by social media users, and the Chinese embassy in France put a message on its website on Wednesday evening urging citizens in China to comply with border checks.

The embassy said it had contacted the woman and asked her to refer herself to French emergency services.

Although French authorities do not yet know when she arrived or what airport she travelled through, they said they were introducing measures to separate passengers arriving in the country with a fever and refer them to emergency health personnel."

? Are you talking about Falls Church? I think that has been modified and they are no longer staying with families but
had some other plans created for them.

Aside from her cavalier (at best and at worst, anti-social) behavior, what in the world possesses someone to post this on social media? I mean, what in the world??

The bad part is that he changed planes somewhere in the US and took public transportation to get to his house from SEATAC. So it really depends on when the virus is contagious.

The good news is that we have a President who will slam doors, unlike with Obama/Ebola.

The Ebola panic was the zeitgeist. It wasn't rational or warranted, as we see in hindsight m. Obama handled it properly.

The Ebola panic was created by rightwing propaganda media to hurt Democrats in the midterm elections that were happening.

There was just a much bigger Ebola outbreak than in 2014, but since Fox didn’t hype it to help Republicans, it didn’t get covered:

Wonder how long before cases start popping up in Atlanta, New York and San Francisco.

Per Lancet it seems that men then women get this for any analyzed age group respectively.
See the table on the top of page 4. Lots of interesting data to look at.
