What do we think will happen on Monday?

Schools are open this weekend for sports and activities. They’ll be open tomorrow. Probably have a delay. Kids will be late. Not a big deal.

Yeah, anecdata caveat, I’m currently sitting in a high school parking lot while my kid practices in the gym.

Either FCPS is closed all week or there is a 2 hour delay every day next week.

I live in walking distance to the elementary school (about 3 blocks) and the high school about .75 miles. The road off of the "main road" to the elementary school is plowed down to the asphalt but it's one-lane and a half at best and the sidewalks are not shoveled. I just can't see how school traffic can get in and out of the neighborhood. two-way traffic just will not fit. Once you get to the main road, it's plowed perfectly; however, all the snow got pushed (or a bobcat came and dumped it on there) onto the sidewalks....so there is no walking to school for the elementary school kids or the high school kids. I don't see how the elementary school could handle traffic. My guess is that there is much worse neighborhoods around schools as well. I don't know what the solution is but I agree we can't wait until March for it to melt. Maybe they need to ramp up online classes again. We are stuck.

It’s probably a 2 hour delay. Optional weekend activities have no bearing on this btw

I am a teacher who actually wants to go back to work, but if Monday is open without a 2 hour delay I’m officially anti Reid. Grossly irresponsible to send buses and kids out in the dark in icy conditions with one-lane roads, icy mountains where bus stops should be, and unshoveled sidewalks. We need everyone to at least get used to this new reality in sunlight.

Also, last I heard from my principal was that our MS parking lot is not clear yet. Staff are being encouraged to “get a ride” rather than drive themselves to work.

But was FCPS responsible for transporting the kids?

There’s a difference.

It tells you that the school facilities (lots and entrances) themselves are ready to go. Not nothing.

Because if the issue is just neighborhood street and sidewalks where no activity is taking place to do anything that we can see and the lift to do anything is completely overwhelming, the calculus has to be just get back to school and people have to figure it out unless they just don’t go to school in February.

Lots aren’t ready to go. Enough spaces have been cleared for sports practices, but not for schools at full capacity.

Not universally true FWIW. I’m looking at hundreds of cleared parking spaces right now.

2 hour delays for the next month are not sustainable.

I doubt FCPS will be closed b/c of the PR problem, though I do worry about people getting hurt as the volume of people trying to navigate the snowcrete increases and more students (including youngkids walking/waiting for buses in the streets AND teen drivers) are out in the mix. Would be safest to stay closed Mon, delay opening Tues, and hope the increased temps make things safe from then on.

I don’t think we should keep schools closed/shortened so parents can avoid, you know, parenting. If its not safe for a teen to drive, the teens parents need to say they can’t drive and bring the kid to school themselves. If the bus stop is blocked parents need to either drive the kids or wait with them.

For all saying FCPS will get sued remember VA has contributory negligence.

+2

Plus, a sports practice is WAY different than getting 2500+ HSers (and staff) into school (even more kids if you're at LB, Hayfield, or Robinson approx 4400 kids).

where was that suggested lol. “We need everyone to get used to this new reality in sunlight.” They’re necessary for this adjustment period back to school. Once we’ve figured it out we can go back to on time.

FCPS isn’t getting sued. People saying that have no clue and don’t understand the law in this area. That is not the escape hatch here.
