Military observations on Ukraine invasion

I also would not be surprised if the Ukrainians are getting covert help from Western intel services. That would also explain a lot about why they’re locating these generals.

I wonder how they are killing these high ranking officers.

They are intercepting their calls and geolocatiing them. Apparently Russian secure communication ERA system does not work so Russian army communicating on not secure lines.

Russia is an incompetent mess where it comes to fighting a real war, they are only good at brutal indiscriminate shelling and bombing of civilian targets, and the idiotic trolls here supporting them should be ashamed.

Remember, though, that the infantry soldiers do not want to be there. That makes a huge difference. I don’t think this is indicative of what they would do if they had everyone fully on board.

Because people with rifles are shooting at them.

So much for the “you can’t fight a modern army with your silly AR15” meme, huh?

This is 100% true. And after Ukraine, it cannot be refuted.

Russia has lost more people in Ukraine in 3 weeks than the US lost in Afghanistan and Iraq combined over 20 years.

Because their non-commissioned officers and conscripts are not doing what they want.

Real battle leaders have to lead from the front; no one else is doing it so the Generals are doing it.
Problem for Russia is that when you are at the front you are exposed to enemy fire.

Russia has some very capable officers; but like any military they rely on their command chain to execute their orders. When that does not work senior officers are exposed to combat as the try to execute their orders.

There is tangible evidence of captured/killed Russian “officers” in uniforms bearing “K” epaulets.

The “K” designates “Kadet” - or student-officers in training.

The Russian situation is so desperate, they have resorted to pulling officer-trainees out of class, to be sent straight to the front lines.

The opposite is true. The Ukraine war is about drones and technology not about small arms.

Why do you say that? They can not deploy in a tactical way, can not supply their troops and their equipment is inferior. Even with the most motivated troops the training is just not there. The Russia way of fighting is to throw men and material at a problem.

"They don't want to be there" yet they can be seen shelling apartment buildings, hospitals, schools, firing machine guns at journalists, evacuation convoys, civilians standing in line for bread. They have a weird and psychopathic way of showing they don't want to be there.

I don't see any evidence to support this possible scenario, but I'm curious what others think: is there a chance that Putin actually wants to draw NATO into Ukraine in order to ignite a broader conflict? Perhaps, so far, he has been fighting with one arm behind his back, and he will only swing with both fists once NATO forces enter Ukraine. Additionally, with NATO deployed in Ukraine, is there a risk that China would then enter the conflict, fighting alongside of Russia?

Putin absolutely wants to draw NATO in so he can strengthen his domestic position within Russia. The "woe is us, NATO is so mean to Russia" narrative plays very well domestically but he really can't deploy that narrative effectively when Russia is just shelling civilians in the Ukraine.

China absolutely will NOT put boots on the ground to fight alongside Russians. Their best case scenario is to sit back and watch Russia and the Western democracies destroy each other.

No, Russia really is this weak. Other than nukes they are no threat to the US, let alone NATO.

Conventionally NATO would crush China and Russia. But is impossible to stay conventional as nukes would be used to take out our carriers. That is target #1 for China.

No, their best case scenario is for Russia to either win or quit now and go home quickly. The first one isn't happening. And so far, neither is the second.

Russia is a major partner for China. So is *everyone else*. If China picks Russia and publicly backs them, they'll be on the wrong side of *everyone else*. But if they abandon Russia entirely, it would hurt them and be destabilizing worldwide. Trying to stay neutral is the best they can do now. This war is not what they want. Unless Russia was able to quickly and effectively take Kyiv/Ukraine, they would have preferred for none of this to happen.

+1 I guess all those trucks stuck in the mud are just unmotivated.

I think Russian morale is low because their equipment sucks and they are taking a lot of casualties.
The soldiers have no problem shooting civilians when they see them and raping the Ukrainian women.

They are not zombies from the walking dead; they are fighting probably the best they can. They just are not a very good military. Never really has been, just brutal.
