When should DC drop its school mask mandate?

100%. If Congress, which was at high risk because of their age can go mask less - DCPS surely can finally follow
CDC and eliminate the school masks.

Turn on the State of the Union and tell me again how my son in K, with 1 in 1,000,000 risk from COVID, has to go to his charter school tomorrow and play at recess with a mask on for a seventh month. And wear a mask for 7 hours indoors while attempting to socialize and learn a foreign language. Because it makes YOU feel comfortable to ignore the CDC. While you work from home (probably).

Totally agree, and speaking of which, any charters announce the end of outdoor masking yet? I supposed I have to go write to admin again and see what the plan is….

Just 25 percent of D.C. children between the ages of 5-11 are fully vaccinated, according to city data. There are wide disparities in vaccination rates between wards, so in many schools the youth vaccination rate is likely far lower than that.

Why does this even matter in light of the Pfizer news today that the vaccine is basically ineffective in kids?? It's a big blow, I get it, but seems that this shouldn't even be a factor now.

Well … 12% affective?!? Not wonder why not even half of kids are not vaccinated. Including mine two.

You are clueless. This just came out. That’s not why 1/2 the kids are not vaccinated.

Vaccinate your kids, there may be more variants. Keep schools open and mask free by vaccinating your kids!

The vaccination rate of children is irrelevant. Omicron blew threw the transmission benefits for kids and adults, and kids in this age group are naturally protected from serious outcomes to such an extent that the vaccine studies basically couldn’t measure a benefit. That said, I vaccinated my kid because I assume he is going to catch it and I’d rather he have an immunological jump start when that happens. But it is perfectly scientifically defensible to refuse the vaccine in this age group.

Biden: “remove your masks and stay in the classrooms”

I have mixed feelings on dropping masks at school. I'm ready to be done with masks but I just got yet another notification that a student in my DD's K class is positive. So far, neither of my kids have gotten COVID when their classmates have had it - and this latest notification is the 5th one this school year. The first 3 occurred before my kids were able to be vaccinated. I don't think kids are doing much social distancing anymore, and they all eat together inside, so maybe the masks do help contain the spread.

Flu is more dangerous to your child than COVID. Before 2020, did it feel like universal indoor masking was necessary to keep your child safe? I disagree with you, but this is a contested area and I could be wrong. But even if I am, a mask optional policy would allow your child to mask and remain as safe as now and allow other parents to choose what they think is best for their kids.

Just like the truckers. You will be successful in your advocacy.

The sad thing is we shouldn’t have to advocate to get our leaders to follow the science and guidance that we’ve been screaming for for two years. Why should that take advocacy when it’s common sense?

The point of masks, vaccines, etc. is not to “contain the spread.” The point was to flatten the curve (to not overrun hospitals) and to reduce severity of illness.

It’s not reasonable to expect all kids to keep wearing masks so your kids never get Covid. Your kids will get it sooner or later (and perhaps have already had it but didn’t notice).

Our charter hasn’t and they seem ridiculously COViD cautious. My kindergartner is trying to learn Spanish and learn to read when she can’t see her teachers pronouncing syllables. The teachers themselves have noted how difficult it is to teach in masks.
