If they are increasing MAX size by 1 that would be:

1st - 24+1
2nd - 26+1
3rd - 26+1
4th - 27+1
5th - 27+1

That’s the MAX recommended size. Most classes will not be that large.

The average 5th grade class last year was 21.7. Very few schools had a class that large.

Chill TF out.

Every single class at ATS will be. I know, I know, cry me a river, but I do wonder how they are all going to fit in the famously undersized McKinley common spaces.

The exterior McKinley classrooms are huge in the old part of the building-- which McKinley used for K, 1st and 2nd. The 3rd grade classrooms at McKinley are the tiniest, but the 4th and 5th grade rooms aren't much bigger. When they built the McKinley addition, they cut down on classroom size a lot to cram more kids into the building. There are also some really awful interior classrooms (no windows) that were originally intended for small group instruction, but got put back into use as classrooms when McKinley got really overcrowded. Those rooms are super tiny with no airflow, and I wouldn't want my kids in them with COVID floating around. But ATS is definitely getting a much nicer building than what they were in before.

Sucks for Key School. 🙃

What do you mean by that? Because the classrooms at Innovation are so small?

I think they mean Escuela Key in the old ATS building. Also the parents who fought rebalancing boundary changes because it was too stressful to think about last fall didn’t do themselves any favors for this year.

For what it's worth, as a parent at ATS I never heard any complaints from anyone about the site. The outside is quite nice - open fields and multiple playgrounds. The location isn't next to a Metro stop, but George Mason & Wilson are big streets that are accessible from other main roads. The building is old and a couple of grades were in portables, but this didn't get in the way of learning or the quality of the experience. ATS was happy there and would have preferred to stay, hopefully in time it will feel like a happy home for Key as well.

I've been in both on tours, and the old Key building (new Innovation building) is old and not that nice. The old ATS building (new Escuela Key building) is newer and nicer, IMO.

Seriously, the old HTS site on GM has a fantastic large building with good styling. Key in courthouse is a 70s elementary boom special, cramped and ugly.

Yep, I heard Cardinal is opening overcapacity (they had to seek a variance on their permit because of required parking).

When/where did you hear this? McK was down about 100 kids last year.

From someone in the civic association (because of the variance request). Maybe they are just preparing for the worst?

The HPOK Civic Association is a bunch of old boomer busy-bodies who don't have a clue what they are talking about. McK lost so many kids that they had to let go of some staff at the end of last year. One of our beloved 4th grade teachers is off to Innovation because McK went down from 5 to 4 classes for 4th grade next year. Most of the North Arlington schools are going to have extra capacity next year because so many people who bailed out for private this year decided the grass actually is greener on the other side, and they aren't coming back.

Weird that Cardinal is the only school with over-subscribed Extended Day with a capacity for 200 kids. I guess we'll see.

Oops, make that at capacity with 220 kids.

I guess the clueless busy-bodies can use the internet. Check out the Statement of Justification Letter listed second at the link:

APS projects Cardinal will be overcapacity due to, ahem, the decision to minimize boundary changes. They could well be wrong about that as usual, but there doesn't seem to be a reason to be ugly about your neighbors in this case.

LOL. I mean, it's a bad situation and I feel for the people zoned there if the building is actually maxed out... but this is exactly what they asked for.

Agree that the Key Building has seen better days. What will happen to it? There’s no way that school can serve most/all of Rosslyn and part of Lyon Village with the new Affordable Housing units that have been approved in Rosslyn. Will they have to add another ES down there?

Cardinal's fall enrollment is only running ~650. There will be plenty of space in the building.

No they'll just bus more of them to ASFS and Taylor from Rosslyn.

Nope. The school board snuck in increased class sizes for K-5 as a cost saving measure. The incoming school Board Member, Mary Kadera, has pushed for flexiblity to increase class sizes as well. How they could do this after the year these kids have had is beyond me.

They didn’t sneak it in there.

It was clearly listed in budget presentation.

Budget shortfalls in the tens of millions range. Teachers also got hit hard in terms of pay scale and what might be considered appropriate raises. It's a school system in trouble in many ways. Every year they publicize their lists of Tier 1, 2 and 3 budget cuts. It's why Spanish went away two years ago, too.

So each year the services we get from APS keep going down, but taxes stay flat or up....where does the money go?

So they increased class size for elementary for budget cuts and spent millions on a virtual program for 3% of APS students??? WTF is wrong with our leadership here. This is so absurd and incredibly obvious our kids education is not being prioritized

Where were you in April/May?

And I’m guessing they wouldn’t have been dying if you read the school talk email messages four months ago.
