So 28, not 30? Or that is so much better /s |
The numbers listed above are the FY20 max numbers. APS increased the max by +1 in FY21 and again by + 1 in FY22. So the max for 4th and 5th this year (FY22) is 29. However, practically speaking, APS isn't opening another class if they are only 1 kid over. Our school principal told us at 5th grade info night last fall that we should expect to see 29-30 kids in each 4th and 5th grade class this year. |
The exterior McKinley classrooms are huge in the old part of the building-- which McKinley used for K, 1st and 2nd. The 3rd grade classrooms at McKinley are the tiniest, but the 4th and 5th grade rooms aren't much bigger. When they built the McKinley addition, they cut down on classroom size a lot to cram more kids into the building. There are also some really awful interior classrooms (no windows) that were originally intended for small group instruction, but got put back into use as classrooms when McKinley got really overcrowded. Those rooms are super tiny with no airflow, and I wouldn't want my kids in them with COVID floating around. But ATS is definitely getting a much nicer building than what they were in before. |
Thanks for sharing. I'm an ATS parent who has only seen the outside which has considerably less space, so it's good to hear that parts of the building are nice. I hope they won't be putting kids in the tiny rooms, but I assume they probably are. |
Sucks for Key School. 🙃 |
Yes, they’ve said there won’t be social distancing. |
Isn't this year FY21? Which school? Choice or neighborhood? |
Did you look at the actual class sizes? I agree that larger classes suck, but it's not like all 5th grade classes have 28 kids. |
What do you mean by that? Because the classrooms at Innovation are so small? |
I think they mean Escuela Key in the old ATS building. Also the parents who fought rebalancing boundary changes because it was too stressful to think about last fall didn’t do themselves any favors for this year. |
Gotcha. We are new so I’m trying to catch up on everything. |
For what it's worth, as a parent at ATS I never heard any complaints from anyone about the site. The outside is quite nice - open fields and multiple playgrounds. The location isn't next to a Metro stop, but George Mason & Wilson are big streets that are accessible from other main roads. The building is old and a couple of grades were in portables, but this didn't get in the way of learning or the quality of the experience. ATS was happy there and would have preferred to stay, hopefully in time it will feel like a happy home for Key as well. |

Yep, I heard Cardinal is opening overcapacity (they had to seek a variance on their permit because of required parking). |

I've been in both on tours, and the old Key building (new Innovation building) is old and not that nice. The old ATS building (new Escuela Key building) is newer and nicer, IMO. |
