If you bought a car in the last month, how much negotiating would the dealer entertain?

I paid $44k out the door in MD for the Highlander XLE. I probably talked to 8-10 dealers plus other brands. No one budged on their price. Some wouldn’t even give me a price unless I was in the showroom. It’s just a crappy time to buy a new car. FWIW My dealer said they were selling a ton of cars this week. Unfortunately I didn’t have the luxury of waiting a few weeks to see if they caved. But I did walk out of a couple dealers and no one was chasing me down.

Well, you got the car you wanted. Congrats! Was this an AWD? Any additional options or accessories?

Yes. AWD - nothing extra.

They countered with a $2000 markup. I said no. I got into my car to leave, and the sales manager came running out and said they would remove the markup. I paid MSRP, which I was fine with.

Compared to several years ago when I bought a car, dealers now seem less inclined to play the email game.

What car was this, if you don't mind me asking?

RAV4 Hybrid

Should have asked the pricing expert here. According to him, no shortage.

Again, for the benefit of those who have reading comprehension problems, I don't doubt there are people who are paying MSRP for cars. You want us to trust what is being said by a car salesman? Lol.

RAV4 Hybrid

This is why I buy at Fitzgerald. Paid a few hundred below MSRP for a RAV4 Hybrid without the back and forth.

Isn’t MSRP just pretend? The real MSRP is the “invoice” price?

Wait, they just had one on the lot? I thought there was a waitlist? Or am I thinking of just the plug in.

It was due to arrive in about a week, and did arrive as promised. Hybrid, not Prime.

They are all talking about inventory shortages but I also thought Toyota is somewhat insulated from the issue. I may walk but I don’t have a ton of leverage, I need a new car in a few weeks and if they truly do run out I don’t want to buy something I don’t want.

Did you try Malloy in Winchester?

Yes, they have 20 in stock and no more coming until November. They’re MSRP less a $750 rebate. They "claim" those 20 will be sold by Tuesday

We were just there, they have none left, so I guess they were correct.

You still holding on to your "no shortage" viewpoint now that it’s widely known?

Got 1000 off MSRP on a Rogue SV AWD. Some dealers were asking over MSRP (which i determined only after running the monthly numbers). I can usually pin one dealer against another and get a great deal. I love car haggling and would normally start at 3K below MSRP. But no joy this year. Dealers were saying, ‘because of tight inventory, I can’t make a deal.’ Happy with what I got given current circumstances

At my husband's dealership they normally have between 350-400 cars on the lot. They are literally down to 68 cars (new).

Used cars are still selling as is their higher end brand car. This is in Springfield.

You have reading comprehension problems. I never said there is no shortage problem overall. I even said back in may that there were shortages for some cars. Inventory has tightened even more in the past couple of months, so it's nearly impossible now to get deals on high demand cars, especially Toyotas.
