New Names for George Mason HS are Sad (FCCPS)

None of the "new" names are any good. Great way to diminish George Mason HS's reputation.

Just go ahead and call it "Equity High."

Cardinal High School!
State bird and all.

I agree. I went to George Mason and I'm sad they're changing the name.

Would be quite arrogant to create confusion with Falls Church HS in the county, which has been so named for decades.

Given the abuses by clerics, that school would need to come with a trigger warning.

I bet the the schools in Falls Church City are more diverse than neighboring McLean/Longfellow/Haycock.

How much? George Mason is 64.4% White, compared to 52.2% at McLean, 49.3% at Longfellow, and 48.5% at Haycock.

You got me there. I am surprised McLean HS is only half white.

Still - 35% non-white is hardly "Segregation High."

The three whitest high schools in NoVa (not including Loudoun County) are George Mason, Yorktown, and Madison.

We can say the law was wrong and even say we don't want to honor people who allowed it or encouraged it on our school buildings. All of that is fine. But to say these are bad people because they did something that was lawful at the time that we now think is wrong is judging the person unfairly. 200 years from now someone will judge you for something you are doing now that is lawful. That doesn't make you a bad person. You are working with the law of the land at this time.

Please. Lawful does not equal moral, and plenty of people were saying it was wrong at the time. Enslaving people does in fact make you a bad person.

No they weren't. I'm sure some were but there weren't many at all. George Mason wouldn't have written the bill of rights which then became the basis for our current bill of rights if plenty of people were saying it was wrong. Slavery has gone on since the beginning of time and still goes on today.

I know I'm a few pages late on this reply, but holy shnikes this is quite a take, and possibly Peak DCUM.

My favorite part about this post is this poster thinks they are being witty.

Like imagine telling a person of color who is triggered by the fact their recent ancestors were bought and sold like cattle to "be less sensitive about it."

Meridian High School
Metropolitan High School
Metro View High School
Tinner Hill High School
West End High School

Meridian, Metropolitan, Metro View, and West End are lame and generic. Yeah, let's rename the high school over a nearby Metro station in another jurisdiction.

And Tinner Hill is performative nonsense. FCC kicked out its Black residents and left them to the county to educate. Now FCC wants to honor the Tinner family. What a joke.

There is something wrong with you if you find these names sad or terrible.

This was a reference to a recent school renaming and that's the name...well, it's an ES but still. Yes, was trying to be funny. I agree Cardinal ES should come with a trigger warning but for another reason all together.

They are all sad replacement names compared to a name that actually honored a complex and important man’s achievements.

? Now someone is trash for wanting states rights knowing the money was always in the north? Not a fan of our bill of rights? That's fine for you, but many immigrants move here specifically because of them.

No one is disputing slavery being wrong. But this is Virginia history. There are many wrongs of the past and people related to things we don't like from our past. There are plenty of states that don't have a history of slavery if this is your main trigger. This person was never recognized for being a slave holder. He founded our bill of rights. The real reason people are triggered in Falls Church over minorities is because it's an incorporated city that excluded blacks. The city needs to deal with that which is much more recent than George Mason's work which mostly happened before we even became an independent nation. They can change the name but it isn't going to change what this man did for America.
