Did he have any ideas about a Bill of Rights for his 100 slaves? |
DP. Your ignorance shows why changing the school name is a bad idea. |
Yes, Maybe you should read up on him. You don't seem to know much. Again Falls Church City can do what they want with the names of their schools. But based on this comment it seems reactionary verses well thought out and the names picked reflect that. |
Interesting take on George Mason from GMU's perspective:

Those quoted in this article in 2016 wouldn't say today that one should consider Mason in his totality, good and bad. They'd just try to cancel him and rename the school like the silly gooses in Falls Church City, who are soon to be stuck with a high school whose name most will have a hard time remembering. |
The university’s namesake’s battle with equal rights was not seen to the fullest during his lifetime. This has led Moffitt to to encourage his peers to ask the critical question, “Do equal rights actually apply to everyone at Mason?”
Does anyone else see the irony in this statement and the idea of changing the name? The name quite literally reminds people to ask themselves this question. |
Independence and Freedom are the names of high schools in Loudoun, and Liberty is an elementary school.
People objecting because George Mason owned slaves, would you propose tearing down Mt Rushmore? Washington, and Jefferson were slaveowners, and Lincoln had very negative views of blacks, who wanted to remove them to Africa. Teddy was considered self-serving for putting himself on the monument, but it looks like he was ahead of his time. |
The point made by the school board in Falls Church was that no one is required to go to the Washington Monument or Mt. Rushmore.....it is ok to recognize people with complicated pasts through monuments that people can choose to visit, and often times now there is detailed information about the good and the bad at these places. However, public school is required. Children are REQUIRED to attend the local school (or pay $$ to go private) and we should not name those places after slaveholders if it makes people feel uncomfortable. There are parents who feel very strongly about sending their child to a school whose namesake could have owned them. |
Then shut down all the schools in Washington, DC and Washington state. |
I don’t get the big deal about changing a name. Who cares. In 100 years the world will be a different place and whatever name we end up with today may be looked upon as strange/insulting/etc and changed to something else. Societal customs and norms change over time. What was acceptable yesterday is not acceptable today, and so on. No one is erasing history, it still exists even without some random school in NOVA retaining the name of the historical figure. |
Waiting for the University to change its name. |
For those of you who are saying this doesn't matter. All this takes time and money...time and money away from educating your kids so they can virtue signal. Idiots. |
Money mismanagement is rampant in schools, and this is just another example. But I also highly doubt that this is taking away all that much time and money from the school - especially this school and their brand new building. |
Trash for wanting states' rights so they can continue slavery. "States' rights" has ALWAYS meant slavery. |
I think they should name the new high school Slavery Sucks High School so there's no doubt about the message and all the kids can be proud to attend. |
