The five recommendations for renaming George Mason HS are terrible.
Meridian High School Metropolitan High School Metro View High School Tinner Hill High School West End High School Meridian, Metropolitan, Metro View, and West End are lame and generic. Yeah, let's rename the high school over a nearby Metro station in another jurisdiction. And Tinner Hill is performative nonsense. FCC kicked out its Black residents and left them to the county to educate. Now FCC wants to honor the Tinner family. What a joke. |
"George Mason" wasn't exactly unique and exciting. Nothing wrong with a generic high school name. |
Why not just call it Falls Church City HS ? |
Why are we renaming George mason? |
Because we can only name high schools these days for saints if we name them for people and there are very few human saints. |
There’s already a Falls Church HS. |
yes- they are terrible. Renaming the school is stupid, but not worth agonizing over. The only acceptable name is West End. |
I don’t think even the saints are good enough these days. See San Francisco and Abraham Lincoln. |
He owned over 100 slaves. Unlike some of the other Founders, he did not free them and make provisions for them in his will. |
... Like George Washington? Mason wrote the Virginia Declaration of Rights, which the US Bill of Rights was based upon. Seems like a keeper to me. But what do I know? |
Nothing makes me feel happier than seeing the name of a slave owner on a public school, right? |
I don't know. I heard Mary Ellen Henderson had flatulence in her later years. Better rename that school, too. |
Can we learn from the past rather than try to change the past? This is stupid. |
This is the most absurd argument ever. Changing a school name so that it doesn't honor a slaveholder is not changing the past! It's learning from the past and changing out actions now and we realize, oh, that's really not cool to honor that person this way!! I can't understand people who think changing the name of a random high school suddenly erases that person from history! |
The high school isn't named to honor a slaveholder. How clueless are you? No wonder we can't have discussions anymore when people spout nonsense like that. |
