New Names for George Mason HS are Sad (FCCPS)

Anonymous
Still waiting for FCC to rename their little stretch of Lee Highway from Washington St to Tinner Hill St. - George Washington was a slaveholder, y'all.

They will rename it Black Lives Matter Avenue without noticing the irony.

It's FCC; I expect nothing less.

I am fine with Meridian but this is legitimately funny. Thanks for the laugh!

How about Capital One High School? Lord knows everything else is being renamed for them, and the school may actually benefit financially from it!

No no no. Nat Turner High should be the name

We may be a bunch of racists but at least our school isn't named after one High School.

He owned over 100 slaves. Unlike some of the other Founders, he did not free them and make provisions for them in his will.

Can we learn from the past rather than try to change the past? This is stupid.

Yes, your comment is stupid. You can't change the past. Even after the name change, the past will be exactly the same, we just won't be celebrating his legacy with a school name.

We need to rename the Commonwealth of Virginia. The state is named after Elizabeth I, the British Monarch that approved John Hawkins slave voyages which was England’s start into the slave trade that would go one for 100s of years and enslave countless people. How dare we not demand that the Bame of the state not be changed!! This is fun.

Lord Fairfax was an actual slave trader. We need to rename the county too.

It seems to me renaming the school *is* learning from the past. We as a society have learned that it isn’t consistent with our shared values to name our institutions of learning to honor slave holders. Now we’re doing something with that knowledge.

Those values don’t seem to be shared, but rather imposed by officials who think renaming schools is more important than prioritizing access to education.

You can engage in all these performative acts and two days later someone from Falls Church City will be telling someone to make sure they look at houses in FCC, rather than the parts of the county with Falls Church addresses, because the schools with more minorities are “bad.”

Those two things are in no ways mutually exclusive. It may even help some students feel invested in their school of it’s not named for someone who would have considered educating them abhorrent. Is inclusion at least a shared value?

Keep telling yourself that - it may make you feel better about the hypocrisy.

The Board of Supervisors already was asked about that. They said No.
