He owned over 100 slaves. Unlike some of the other Founders, he did not free them and make provisions for them in his will.

Can we learn from the past rather than try to change the past? This is stupid.

This is the most absurd argument ever. Changing a school name so that it doesn't honor a slaveholder is not changing the past! It's learning from the past and changing out actions now and we realize, oh, that's really not cool to honor that person this way!! I can't understand people who think changing the name of a random high school suddenly erases that person from history!

The high school isn't named to honor a slaveholder. How clueless are you?

No wonder we can't have discussions anymore when people spout nonsense like that.

Then please clue me in on why the school is named George Mason.

It honors all the other things he did. Duh.

Well other than having sex with a teenaged girl, Matt Gaetz is a pretty great guy. See how that works? Not so well.

I'll be so glad when this Marxist purge fad is over.

Here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Mason

For example: "His writings, including substantial portions of the Fairfax Resolves of 1774, the Virginia Declaration of Rights of 1776, and his Objections to this Constitution of Government (1787) opposing ratification, have exercised a significant influence on American political thought and events. The Virginia Declaration of Rights, which Mason principally authored, served as a basis for the United States Bill of Rights, a document of which he has been deemed a father."

Those names all sound like condo complexes in the exurbs.

It's a really pathetic list of names to consider. Four of the five are generic "nothing" names. The fifth name - Tinner Hill - is an exercise in hypocrisy since Falls Church City is full of residents who never shut up about how their high school is so much better than Falls Church HS, which actually has a significant number of minority students, unlike George Mason.

What a bunch of nonsense.

Oh right! I forgot about the asterisk after the school name that indicated that they named they were honoring just the things George Mason did for the government and not the part where he owned people!

There's no asterisk. This is normal stuff understood by (most) everyone.

NP. But at what point does it end? If the bad history is replaced by good history what good does that do for the 4-5 generations after?

We should get rid on anything/everything this awful man did and never speak of him again. Bill of Rights too.

It's not comparable. At the time he was allowed to have slaves and even encouraged. Matt went against the law.
