My youngest drives his Jeep off road at least once or twice a month. He is very into hiking and camping and being outdoors. He has pulled people out of the mud and snow several times. He often drives mountainous roads when he takes road trips. Not all of us are raising pasty kids who sit in front of a computer all day. For people who love off road travel, camping, hiking, etc. Jeep is a good choice. Also, if you are a decent driver, you aren’t going to flip a newer Jeep. My kids got their licenses out of state at 15. When they left for college, they had over three years of daily driving experience.

I'm not compensating for anything. I'm enjoying myself. I like driving up rocky/muddy trails in Virginia or Pennsylvania, and going camping way up high in the mountains at GWNF, in places that are too far up into the mountains to hike to with a campsite worth of gear. We bring our huge 18" reflector telescope and look at stars and galaxies and nebulae, stuff you can't see without being way up in the mountains above the valley fog and far from city lights.

Just because you personally don't like it, doesn't mean others don't - or shouldn't - enjoy it.

Frankly, you sound like an unpleasant, joyless loser. Constantly casting aspersions on others and judging them. You not liking something is hardly a reliable barometer for normal people.

Well at the very least you are compensating for your families inability to pack in your own gear when you go car camping - our family hauls our own stuff on our back rather than patting ourselves on the back for bringing the ills of technology to the backcountry and there is really not much that is more unnecessary or wasteful than a gas guzzling SUV.

The worst intrusions you get in the back country in the US (though not in other countries where people have actual common sense about this stuff) is from fossil fuel jocks in their SUV's or ATV's tearing up the wilderness and bringing noise and pollution all while convincing themselves how progressive and outdoorsy they are because they have the machismo to press on the gas pedal.

No doubt you like it and think it is cool but it is destructive and wasteful. The only silver lining is virtually no one actually takes their Jeeps (or any other SUV's) off road though that just reinforces the stupidity and selfishness of people sitting in traffic on the beltway burning up fossil fuels in their vanity trucks.

As a dad who is a car nut, I strongly encourage that you entertain the idea of getting a Jeep. While I would never buy one, because it doesn't suit my tastes, a Jeep is definitely among the selected group of vehicles that stirrs the soul and offers to its owner an experience that is more than mere transportation.

Maybe it is no longer popular to show desire towards a car, or it is not progressive enough to have general disdain for personal vehicles as a matter of environmentally friendly principles. But we are in a transitional period where one can still experience the rewards of owning a car that has a personality. We can still yet celebrate this culture before future generations grow increasingly detatched from it.

In this era of detatchment from nature and lack of first-hand experiences with genuine people, places, and things, owning a car such as a Jeep can help restore authenticity to the experience of growing up and traveling within this great nation of ours. A little adventure and excitement is good for any person on their way to a mature adult.

This isn't a college kid, this is a woman in her mid-20's and there there are lots of different jeeps. None of the ones suggested are equal except the toyota and even then its not equal. Hummer is making a come back in the spring..

They use no more gas than many other vehicles. How many gallons a month do you use? The vehicle is not as important as much as how much you drive. And, its probably no worse than the 4000+ square foot house you live in

We do similar trips but we rent a 4WD since we don’t need it for our daily driver. Gas savings alone on our commute pays for rental.

Pretty sure OP DD isn’t camping in a national forest FYI. But enjoy them before they burn up I guess.

Instead of complaint about gas, why don't you not drive so much? If they are so terrible, why rent one? I fill my tank every 3 weeks... how much are you filling yours?

Third, the Dept of the Interior and the BLM, the agencies that manage the GWNF and every other NF, fully support and encourage off-road driving on existing backcountry OHV trails because doing so keeps those trails open and passable, which is vital for firefighting access in forest lands.

About 8% of Jeep Wrangler owners use the off-road regularly, according to F/C's own data. That's a small percentage, but it's enormous compared to other off-road vehicle brands.

Jeep even offers dozens of off-road driving events around the country every year for Jeep owners.

It's really amusing how much hate there is out there (and in here) for Jeep Wranglers.

For a fairly innocuous, affordable, ubiquitous vehicle that's always been regarded as a "fun" car, I can't fathom that there's so much hate for it. Except that I guess there's just a lot of really, really angry people out there, who simply despise that others are enjoying themselves somehow.

It's sad. I feel awful for them to have so little in their lives that the only thing they seem to thrive on is lashing out at others who aren't as miserable as them.
