I have never owned one, but used rental on vacation and it was fun to drive.
I think if I were a college student or was shopping for the first car that would be definitely an option for a young person. It has youthful vibes to it. I remember reading something about some issues of one or another so read carefully especially if buying older models to avoid problems. It is very important to know all about both models before deciding, what issues there were in the past, were they fixed, which is more reliable. Google people's reviews for each model and read, start with the problems and that will get you somewhere. Don't be discouraged by the problems in general, all cars have them, it is just to see how companies handle them and if they fix them... Jeep can get you out of many conditions that other cars can't it is all terrain car and can go places. Really places not like other cars claim ..
Good luck and congrats! It is awesome that your kid will have a nice car to drive. You can find basic info about the two here and there are problems listed... https://repairpal.com/cars/compare/jeep-compass-vs-jeep-renegade |
| Honda hasn't made the Element since like 2011, I think. |
|
BTW.. another cool car for college age kids is Mini cooper if you can afford one..
they are super cute.. |
The HRV is an underpowered piece of garbage. |
Renting one vs. buying one is completely different. Would I rent one? yes, absolutely. Would I buy one? hell, no way! |
Ugg these are not cool and literally is the opposite of a car high off the ground. These are so claustrophobic. |

everyone in my family has jeeps. I’ve got two wranglers. My son has a Cherokee. Two of my SILs and two nieces have wranglers. We all love off roading. Other than regular maintenance, I don’t have any other expenses- even for my 19 year old one. And my maintenance is cheap because my son is a mechanic and does my oil changes and brakes.
Only criticism from my family is that if you’re sitting in the back, it’s not that comfortable of a ride. |
Can you elaborate on why it needs to high off the ground and AWD? Is she literally trekking to remote places like a park ranger? I would look at a Toyota Forerunner. If the needs are something. Maybe Toyota or Honda truck? |
Jeep is 4WD. AWD is not as good. |
This. If you are paying for it, the question is not which car to buy but why are you doing that? |
| If she wants high off the ground and 4WD then go for the Wrangler. We have a new 2020 JL and its been fantastic and a lot of fun. You can get an extended warranty if you are concerned. Its nice as you can get lots of aftermarket parts and there is a huge jeep community to help. The wranglers did very well in the latest crash testing. Just read online as pricing is easy to negotiate as you can easily figure out what the best deal is (Jeep folks like to help each other). My only regret is not buying it sooner. |
So, your son is the black sheep of the family....where did you go wrong? |
The higher it is the more rolling over it will do. Not safe. The "visibility" thing does not fly. |
They are safe... the new crash tests have them doing better than a lot of other cars and those don't take into account upgrades like steel bumpers. |
Depends on what you want it for. If she needs a car to go off roading in, probably not. Not sure why she needs high clearance. If she does need these because she's fording streams and driving through mud, then you might want to get a Jeep or a truck. If she just wants to be up higher and have a car that works ok in some weather, she may not need a Jeep. |
