The new 2020 Wranglers get good safety ratings. Its shocking how little you know about it.

That website seems to base its ratings on lots of things that are safety factors for those *outside* the vehicle, such as pedestrians and cyclists, or for automatic steering and braking.

I don't consider those safety features.

I can drive. I don't need lane assist or automatic braking. And I'm not picking a vehicle based on pedestrian or cyclist safety. If pedestrians and cyclists want to be safe, they should use crosswalks or stop at stop signs and redlights and follow traffic laws like cars are required to. But I'm certainly not going choose my vehicle based on how effective it is a protecting dumb pedestrians and cyclists from the consequences of their actions.

No wonder Australia is on fire and California as well on an annual basis now. I lived in the Valley for 4 years and no one needs an AWD or something high off the ground to drive on Mulholland Drive - or was that a troll post?

Crosstrek is more youth friendly than an outback. Very safe and relatively inexpensive too. Comes in weird young people colors like baby blue and orange.

Crosstrek will need both front CV axles before 100k miles, and at least a couple wheel bearings.

And God help you if the CVT transmission has problems. The repair cost will literally total out a five year old car.

I lease a loaded jeep grand cherokee limited with active safety package and heated seats/steering wheel package. I got a great deal at Darcars in rockville. I'd probably never buy a Jeep because of common electrical issues (luckily mine hasn't had any problems yet, knock on wood) but I love leasing it. If anything breaks it's not my problem as it will always be covered by warranty while I have it. If you want your kid to keep a car through the end of college and then some, consider buying a 4runner, rav4, or lexus NX. expensive upfront but it will be safe and reliable. Look into the issues with airbags not deploying in subarus and be aware

We do similar trips but we rent a 4WD since we don’t need it for our daily driver. Gas savings alone on our commute pays for rental.

Pretty sure OP DD isn’t camping in a national forest FYI. But enjoy them before they burn up I guess.

Well at the very least you are compensating for your families inability to pack in your own gear when you go car camping - our family hauls our own stuff on our back rather than patting ourselves on the back for bringing the ills of technology to the backcountry and there is really not much that is more unnecessary or wasteful than a gas guzzling SUV.

The worst intrusions you get in the back country in the US (though not in other countries where people have actual common sense about this stuff) is from fossil fuel jocks in their SUV's or ATV's tearing up the wilderness and bringing noise and pollution all while convincing themselves how progressive and outdoorsy they are because they have the machismo to press on the gas pedal.

No doubt you like it and think it is cool but it is destructive and wasteful. The only silver lining is virtually no one actually takes their Jeeps (or any other SUV's) off road though that just reinforces the stupidity and selfishness of people sitting in traffic on the beltway burning up fossil fuels in their vanity trucks.

Jeeps are the only brand where the entire range of models they offer gets black marks from Consumer Reports. Usually you'll see one dud model among a carmaker, but for Jeep it's every single model due to maintenance, reliability, and safety.

They are fun though, and there's a loyal following among their owners. Just the cars are basically junk.

Have your daughter run insurance quotes for these vehicles before she gets them. I know that the insurance for a Jeep Wrangler is very expensive for younger drivers, high end sports car expensive.

My insurance costs went down not up. Wrangler was cheaper than old vehicle.
