OR maybe it's Captain Tripps!

No, in World War Z I believe the immune compromised were immune to the zombie virus.

I think Contagion is more relevant here, where Gywneth Paltrow brings back the virus from Hong Kong.

The immunity in World War Z was in the movie, not in the book. The book starts with infected people in a Chinese village that the Chinese government downplays and covers up.

Station Eleven

Yup, Station Eleven. Terrifying.

They’re taking temps at airports in LA, NY and San Fran but they should do it everywhere.

Uh, all passengers flying in from Wuhan, China are being routed to one of five airports in the US for screening:

More people will die from hysteria than from the virus itself.

If he starts to have a fever, where should he go to check if he has this virus? ER right?

it's probably your garden variety cold or another bug you get from long-hauls to Asia / jet lag / etc, so definitely don't panic. I think the estimate is a 14-day incubation period so kind of unlikely he got it a few days ago and is presenting symptoms already.

You should contact your doctor with your symptoms and be very specific in explaining that you have recently traveled to Asia and you are feeling ill. Yes it is a China bug but with significant Japan-China travel nowadays it's possible to have picked something up in an airport for example. Most doctors have a contagious disease protocol that they will (or should) follow, perhaps referring you to a specialist or a specific hospital if they feel this should be escalated. There is a test to determine if it is this new virus that has been prepared by the W.H.O. and I suspect labs here are already getting the details of how to spot this virus.

Deaths from China’s new virus rose to 17 on Wednesday with more than 540 cases confirmed.

So that’s what, 3% fatality rate? I’m sure China is underreporting but that’s still about a fifth of what SARS was. More like bog-standard pneumonia. Why should we be more concerned about this than the really nasty flu season we’re already having?

The guy came from China to the US by plane. We need to stop people coming China into the US. Total travel ban.

Do we know which airports he went through?

If you read the details, the severe pneumonia symptoms start like a week into onset of fever. Way too early to tell what the fatality rate is going to be. Keep in mind that only like 24 patients have been cured. 17 dead, 24 cured doesn't sound so good. We just don't know yet.

It would actually make sense to do have a travel.ban like this temporarily. But since it's to help everyone's health, and is not.political, money making, or will help win elections, I doubt anyone will bother.

Those 17 deaths are compared to the early number of 30 or 40 confirmed cases. We have to see how the next 400+ get along in the next few days.

It's mathematically too early to create mortality statistics or anything like that.
