Start with Pricescope. The first thing is figuring out what you have. |
Only if it looks fake. Lab created on high a high quality, tastefully designed setting is not vulgar. Diamonds are such a shake down. |
| Lab grown diamonds ARE real diamonds in every sense, in fact superior bc they do not have any flaws. They are chemically and structurally identical to mined diamonds - pure carbon atoms arranged in a lattice structure. As a PP noted, there are no tests to tell the two apart bc they are the SAME. The only way someone might suspect they are lab grown is bc of how flawless they are! |
It will look fake because it is obvious you and your basic fiancé don’t have the kind of money to frivolously drop on a natural near flawless 3 ct diamond ring. It’s like the teenagers walking around with giant diamond studs. Pretty sure you don’t need a scope to tell you they aren’t real. |
| I think that is a really personal decision. For me, I would not because I wouldn't feel it was real. But if you would be happy with it, go for it. |
| Doesn't matter to me in any way. However, I'm also fascinated with the whole diamond engagement ring obsession, and I don't understand it. Do women treat the diamond like a dowry or something? The price of diamonds are controlled by a few big companies to make sure it stays high and I have issues with the way some of them are mined. |
People who use the word "skanks," especially on a thread about fake diamonds, are skanks. |
LOL |
You are wrong about the price controls. I am an antitrust lawyer and have represented jeweler clients. It’s just untrue. Whether diamonds are particularly rare or not in the abstract isn’t the question. They’re costly to mine and absolutely rare in high clarity, colorless, large pieces (ie big enough to yield a 3 carat cut stone). |
That's right. Real diamonds are not flawless. Just like fake noses, fake lips, botoxed brows try to appear flawless -- that is their flaw. |
|
I wouldn't.
It will always bug you because you'll know it's not "real." |
| I have a lab grown diamond for my engagement ring. That’s what I wanted because I wanted mine made by lab techs making $20/hr with health insurance rather than people with no other options making $2/week in dangerous conditions. Probably neither scenarios are exactly what’s going on but that’s what I was thinking. |
This is right on. We should buy fake diamonds because it's better for the environment and all the human beings involved in both processes. Just don't say we should call them real diamonds for those reasons. |
I also have a lab grown diamond for these reasons. One additional reason, which feels so ridiculously "DC" that I cannot believe I am even saying this: I am an antitrust lawyer and want to encourage competition against the DeBeers monopoly. The diamond is great and I feel good about wearing it. If I were to do it over again, though, I might opt out of the diamond entirely, and go for something less traditional. |
Do you know how much they make? People can just choose not to spend their money that way. If I were getting married now, I’d buy a lab stone instead and spend the $20,000 I saved on a few vacations instead. And if I ever lose my ring, I will not replace it at all. There are so many other things I’d rather spend that money on now. Although, to your point, if I’m wearing a 3 c ring, it’s reasonable to think I also have a nice home, car, and vacation schedule. By some standards I have these but not by my own. |
