Get the lab grown.

Seriously. Diamonds aren't rare! It's just marketing and manipulation of the market!

I know some smug buzzfeed article told you this, but it’s not true. High quality diamonds are rare, and they are no longer subject to monopolistic pricing.

Can you be specific about what you think this proves? An article that points out diamonds exist in space, I mean... not sure what your point is.

What I’m asking is if any of you have actual advice for Op rather than just saying “ew no that’s fake I can just tell even though most trained jewelers can’t”?

I have no skin in this game as my diamond is mined and I’m not in the market for another but I’m curious why the naysayers are the most defensive.

Lots of these posts are helpful. Diamonds are rare and do have resale value. Lab diamonds are chemically identical to mined diamonds and not even a jeweler with a loupe can tell—unless you’re actually talking about CZs, which have been marketed as “lab” diamonds, but are not.

I’ll also add that my fear for lab diamonds is the market will fall out. DeBeers already sells them for much cheaper than their competitors. I wouldn’t want to pay $3k for a big lab diamond that ends up costing $500 in a few years. I own lab diamonds, but only spent $1k. I wouldn’t feel comfortable spending more, knowing how prices for other materials came down over time (eg moissanite).

No stone under a few million dollars is an investment.

Gold you say.. mining you say.. but you forget that there is already TONS of gold on
the very surface of our Mother Earth and it is been in the circulation for generations.
So most of the gold that you see does not have to be mined.

Yeah, and also, why would you add to the misery and make people mine
for diamonds if they are already mining for gold?

Let’s be real. OP isn’t getting a lab diamond because she feels ethically torn about the diamond mining industry. She wants to get one so she can feel super fly and flash a giant rock she otherwise couldn’t afford.

Even if she is, who cares? Is a diamond just a star on the belly of a sneetch for you? I mean, I can’t afford large or many stones, lab grown or from the bowels of hell, but if it could I’d run around my house with ropes of them on like a czarina just because I enjoy the sparkle so much. If OP (hi OP! What did you decide?) chooses a lab grown stone for the wrong reasons, she still helps save the environment and possibly the life of a child.

Synthetic is better for the Environment and if no sweet child is harmed then it's one million percent better.

Case closed.

Guys, I believe her.

The way you keep appropriating traditionally black slang - earlier in the thread you said op wants to be a “baller” and now you say she’s trying to be “super fly” - makes me think you’re classist/racist and think only “proper” white ladies like you deserve nice things. I.e. you don’t want a tacky “baller” like op to have a bigger diamond than you, so you have to keep going on and on about how your 1ct. is real but her 2ct. Is “fake.”

I really don’t get what the big deal is if she wants a bigger diamond anyway. You’re acting like a ring is an “investment” when in reality it’s just a very expensive piece of jewelry. Her taste still matters. Maybe she likes bigger stones, maybe she has big hands and a 1ct. looks small...my point is she’s buying a ring that she should in theory wear every day so she may as well like it a lot.

Lastly your comments about what she can and cannot otherwise afford are hysterical. She has a fiancé who can drop 15k on a natural 1ct. ring or a lab grown 2ct. ring. They aren’t poor, they’re debating their $15k choice. It’s not like she’s getting a loan to buy the ring. They clearly have money.

A fake diamond is the same as a leased car.

Wanting to look richer than you are. Period.

Uh, no. A leased diamond would be the same as a leased car.

That's a really good idea, actually. Is there a RTR for jewelry?

pat of the allure of a diamond is the work it took to get it out of the earth and the craftsmanship. Lab is just fake.

And your issue with that is ? What? Does it make you feel bad that you overpaid for your?

They are chemically and structurally identical to mined diamonds. "Craftsmanship" just means cutting the stone, the process is the same for mined or lab-grown.
