Euphoria on HBO

I know I am late to the game but I just watched a few episodes with my husband. I find this show very disturbing and I am no prude. Why are we showcasing sex scenes of adults that are supposed to be of minors? Zendaya was masturbating, as teen, in bed, wtf? “Teens” getting pounded and chocked out in bed? My husband and I do drugs, drink and have wild sex but found the story line very disturbing of graphic sex of “teens” in high school.

Well, I get where you’re coming from, but it’s a story and it’s meant to be disturbing, it’s not prescriptive. And this is real life for some teens.

Anyone watch season 2 last night??? So good. I missed this show.

So I just started watching this show and was surprised there isn’t more of a discussion here.

I actually was so disturbed by the first episode that i abandoned it and after seeing it hyped all over, returned a few weeks later. The extremity and promiscuity of the sex, the hard drugs, and violence is shocking to begin with and even more so to see it played out in a teenage population. This could not have been more different from my high school experience, and I wondered who this show is actually intended for as I would sooner cancel HBO than let my teenager watch this. I suppose for twenty and thirty somethings +?

Anyway, once I got past the initial shock of it, most of the storylines pulled me in. Season 2 seems a bit more palatable so far but only a couple of episodes in. The acting is excellent, as usual for hbo.

The scene in the gay bar between the young Cal and his best friend in the 90’s was one of the most beautiful scenes I have ever seen on TV. I am a Gen Xer and was never a huge INXS fan until I saw that scene. Wow.

Yes I love cal, minus the whole raping transexual children….I guess I mean I love the actor.

What was up with Jules stealing that white claw, almost dying for it, leaving rue on the highway then being shocked to learn rue does drugs.

Cals a jerk who messed up his kid badly, and is also a pedophile. Have sympathy for anyone who feels they have to hide their sexuality but that’s far as my sympathy goes for him, and is really canceled out by his other behavior.

Nate is a total mystery to me. What is going on in that boys mind?

I watched the first episode because I work with teenagers and wanted to get the hype. I was shocked, and not in a good way.

I think it’s equally disturbing that you and your husband do drugs. Who is watching your kids when you do that? That’s ridiculously irresponsible.

Ugh. This show felt gross to me. Graphic teen drug use, sleezy sex. It’s not for me. It’s not “glorifying” drug use, but these sort of shows “normalize” drug use.

Agree. That was a hauntingly good scene. I’m still thinking about it a week later.

So many things wrong with this. Isn't it kind of child porn to be watching depicted sexual acts among teenagers?

What also makes me sad is how so many teens have access to their parents' HBOMax account in order to watch this and the other gratuitous stuff on there. I'm not a prude either, but when I compare it to what I watched at that age, it just makes me sad at how early kids are being introduced to this stuff just from media and the internet now.

I have rewatched that scene three times. The rest of the episode with the other storylines paled in comparison, but the opening scene was pure gold. I will never forget it. Oh, to have that kind of love and friendship, if only for a moment.

It was so well done. The music choice, the way things finally culminated for them. Of course we know what happens afterwards where things didn’t work out for them, but I’m glad the characters had their moment. It was masculine but tender. Really memorable.
