What was the Tech adventure? |
I actually don't find the terms " the grounds" or " 1st years, etc" to be pretentious. Referring to it at "the University" is obnoxious. |
I was visiting the school about two years ago and couldn't believe the number of guys I saw wearing pastel polo shirts. That's really not the type of thing you see on other college campuses. |
Oh come on, don't be so obtuse. The term preppy isn't exclusive anymore to waspy rich people from the NE. Every high school has a "preppy" crowd. As in the type of kids who play Lacrosse and join frats. They don't have to spend their summers going to the cape. |
This is a lot of money for middle class families. Only rich or poor kids are going to the $62,000 schools. |
Well it wasn't when most other colleges started either, but they all still use the terms now. |
| I think the author’s point that a state university should should primarily aspire to educate students from that state is valid. With its endowment UVA doesn’t need the full pay OOS students. |
The use of all of those terms is even more reason to avoid the place. |
Douche lord alert! |
Bitch. |
http://www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2014/04/origin-freshmen-sophomore-junior-senior/ Yes nothing really happen before UVA’s founding .... |
As has already been explained, those terms were Jefferson's choices back when freshman, sophomore, junior, senior had barely made it over the pond from Oxbridge. The word "campus" also was not in use at the time. It's not a school newspaper article but one student's opinion editorial - and a poor one at that. |
UVA's 8 billion dollar endowment is a shadow of Yale's at 27B and Harvard's at 32 billion. UVA is in the midst of building projects like the new basketball arena, new dorms, rehabilitation of the Rotunda (just finished) AND at the same time participates in QuestBridge and AccessUVA for low income students. No other public university participates in Questbridge. UVA guarantees 100% of need met, so if FAFSA indicates the student needs a full ride, the student will get a full ride package. |
Jefferson conceived of the University in 1802, long before the use of fresh, sophomore, junior, senior crossed the pond from Oxbridge. If anything, it would be pretentious for UVA to use an Oxbridge connotation in Jefferson's mind. First/Second/Third/Fourth year indicates the first four years of one's education which should go on throughout life. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Virginia |
How else would the student author refer to the school in a student newspaper? |
