Why not? UVA tracks with UCLA and Berkeley now. Depending on the ratings it is second or third in the state school line-up.

UVa wants to compete with the privates that have traditionally been the next-best choice by ivy rejects (i.e. Vandy, Rice, Emory, GU, WUSTL, ND etc).

Huh? bad list. UVA swept past those a number of years ago.

Lol...you’re funny. Outside of Virginia, UVA has a fairly mediocre brand.....nowhere near a UCLA or Michigan

You need to keep up. UVA no. 1 public university in America by Business Insider, ahead of Michigan, UCLA and Berkeley. http://www.businessinsider.com/best-public-colleges-in-the-united-states-2016-8#4-university-of-california-at-los-angeles-11

Who cares about business insider...no one thinks of UVA as the # 1 public. that is by far Berkeley, with a brand that uva could only dream to match. UCLA, UMich are also better regarded than UVA. Plus these are all publics, UVA is not on par with top 20 privates, get a grip please.

That hurt, didn't it? UVA ahead of Michigan, UCLA and Berkeley

by all means continue having delusions of grandeur. it is such a hallmark of UVA boosters.

+1 UVA accepts over 40% of in-state applicants who are primarily applying because it's a cheap alternative to private universities. Hardly prestigious but keep on striving, I guess.

27.8% of EA for class of 2022. Also, you can't compare UVA's statistics to a private because applicants to a state flagship are both self-selected (high school kids know what it takes and don't apply, like our DC knew there was no chance so applied to other VA schools) or are selected and guided to UVA by the public high school college counselros. If you don't have a 4.0+ weighted and ACT over 31 there's no point in applying. 94.5% of the EA students are in the top 10% of their class. The SCHEV reports that of the entering class in fall of 2017, 25% of the class had a 4.44 or higher; the median 50% had a 4.19 and the bottom 25% had a 4.13 in high school. Top 25% of students had an ACT of 33 or better.

UVA ranks no. 1, 2 or 3 amongst top public universities, always over Michigan and in competition with UCLA and Berkeley. https://news.virginia.edu/content/us-news-lists-uva-among-top-three-public-universities-27th-straight-year. http://www.businessinsider.com/best-public-colleges-in-the-united-states-2016-8#2-university-of-michigan-at-ann-arbor-13. And applications went over 37,000 this year. A lot is changing in the university/college world fast because so few parents want to spend $65K to 82K a year for a private SLAC or private university.

^UVA is not on par with Berkeley, UMich and UCLA in terms of global (or even domestic) recognition.

I would think that the low tuition would trigger more in-state kids to apply, qualified or not. And why are you cherry picking EA applicant stats? UVA boosters are so sad.

It’s actually the jealous Maryland posters who are so pathetic. Is this really what a generic campus in a drab suburb with a turtle for a mascot does to one’s psyche?

I'm not cherry-picking EA stats. If you knew anything about UVA you would know that RD doesn't come out until April 1st, so all that's available is EA. But the SCHEV reports for enrolled students 2017 include all students.

Please go read all of the Indian, S. Korean and Chinese students rejected EA from UVA on College Confidential. Then read Kiplinger and U.S. News and Business Insider. UVA now ranks 1, 2, or 3 for best public university. Here UVA is no. 1 beating out UCLA and Berkeley. http://www.businessinsider.com/best-public-colleges-in-the-united-states-2016-8#1-university-of-virginia-14

You can tell who they are. The Marylanders engage in bigoted cultural stereotyping of UVA students. They call UVA students "all preppy" or "all rednecks" not realizing that one group would cancel out the other. In turn, it is rare for a Virginian to make fun of Maryland Universities and I've never, ever seen anyone make fun of the turtle mascot.

“Self selection” LOL. The counselors don’t pick who applies there.
Anonymous
There's one poster here who is convinced counselors control where students apply. They'll definitely tell you if they think your list is too ambitious for your profile and will try to get you to look at some "match" schools, but they can't stop anyone from applying to a school and they don't have Tim etc write different letters for each school.
Anonymous
Can the two people going back and forth stop with the massive quotes? Delete the old quotes so your one, snarky retort doesn't take up half a page.

Or you could just stop trying to argue that UVA is a bad school or whatever you are trying to say. No one is paying attention anymore.

I wonder if it's always the same poster, insisting that counselors decide who can apply where. This is simply not the case, and never has been.

If your child has a 3.5 why would you waste money applying to UVA?

Very , very poorly ranked internationally since it specializes in the less rigorous majors.
