Hard candy really must have been a generational thing.

Both sets of my grandparents had glass candy dishes, with covers (one was shaped like an urn), which they'd set out on a table somewhere in the living room and it was always filled with various hard candies mentioned on here. I remember trying some of it as a child but not developing any particular affection for them. My father once commented that his parents' generation (pre WWII) grew up with hard candy and trips to candy shops, while his generation (1950s) favored chocolate candy bars over hard candy.

I love this thread. Makes me want to watch the candy store scene in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!

My Nana always had Nips and Ande's mints. And the aforementioned Christmas hard candy. Pick up one and about 10 are stuck together!

Remember when there were always big open bins of brachs candies in the grocery store? There were always several bins of those caramel things.

Remember when there were always big open bins of brachs candies in the grocery store? There were always several bins of those caramel things.


Yes! Why don't they have those anymore? Or the red-dyed pistachios? You'd get a little bag of those, and then go with your mom to write a check for the groceries

Really random, but today i visited the only historical candy shop in America. The owner was there and i spoke to her and she is a candy historian. I shit you not, they sold little grandma purses full of old fashioned grandma candy.

where is this?

both sets of my grandparents had various hard candies (butterscotch, the strawberry wrapped ones, just solid colored hard drops), nips (still love those!) and andes candies. i also associate bit o honey and those peanut butter taffies with older generations.

I make the best Christmas cookies- with half of an Andre mint melted on top of each chocolate cookie.

My favorite candy is Mary Janes. I thought k of them as old people! Also those sweet honey sesame candies? Yumz
