| Russell Stover. My grandma would always say "get the nice chocolates, get Russell Stover." Now that she's gone I sometimes buy a mini-box when I miss her. |

What you all are labeling as old people candy was what was readily available to us in elementary school in the early 90s - even though I had young (age 22-35) teachers back then. This is back when kids would get candy at school bc obesity wasn't a real issue; you'd have some kind of chart where if you got 5 stars, you pick out a piece of candy, 15 was a gift from a grab bag etc.
I recall how terrible some of the candy was - ugh - those strawberry ones with the strawberry goo inside; root beer barrels; licorice shoestrings. Ugh. My (immigrant) family considered Russell Stover fancy - maybe others did too back then; so we'd always get a box around the holidays. Still have a fondness for those. Rarely buy it but bought a bunch of the small (4 or 6 piece) Russell Stover hearts on sale after Valentines for like 50 cents. |
