Tenley Chick Filet takes measures against loitering after school by students, including Wilson

By behavioral norms I mean not shoplifting or attacking people in the street --things that go way beyond "kids will be kids'' the knee jerk defense. They should also have something to do/a place to go. It is fun to hang out with your friends. One doesn't always have a club, a job etc. Schedules vary. The school could look at this. They have a beautiful atrium. The idea of bringing food in and having kids hang there is a good one. AGAIN, the school and governing bodies need to be involved in this discussion and address the raised concerns.

Many privates stay open very late for just this reason. Wilson could provide homework help and study hall, open gym - it would be a win-win. Most privates are open till 6 pm, cafeteria or vending could be opened - $$$ stays at Wilson. GDS stays open even later.

These activities - and more - area already available to Wilson students.

Yes, it gets crowded and some of the kids can be very obnoxious but I have
never felt threatened even slightly. Deal has over 1500 kids, Wilson has over 2000. Added to the mix are AU students, GDS, Janney, Sidwell, etc and it is bound to get crazy. If it bothers some of you people so much, simply avoid the area between 3.30-4.30 pm and you should be ok.
Or move to Bethesda or McLean. I hate the idea of shutting out all kids from other wards. DC is segregated enough already.
The last thing we need in Tenley is another mini Bethesda all-white downtown. The businesses are free to do what they want but they are thrilled to have business from the students and clearly were targeting them when they opened in the area.

Nobody has suggested this. Neighbors and businesses would not like to be subjected to crime. It's Interesting that to you that seems to equate to being lily white?

Oh please. There is no objective data, or frankly, even anecdotal data, indicating that these Wilson and Deal kids are committing a significant number of crimes. Is there zero crime? Of course not. Is there reason for you to be terrified of crime? Absolutely not.

Go back and read this thread. People aren't concerned about crime. They are concerned, basically, about kids being kids. And that is ridiculous.

Can these kids behave better? Probably. Is it worth all the hand-wringing and garment-rending that is going on in this thread? Of course not.

People have described witnessing and experiencing assault. Specifically projectile throwing, which can cause death fyi. You seem to thin expecting civil behavior from students would affect diversity in Tenleytown. You seem like you suffer from low expectations for AA teens if not outright racism towards them? I know many AA teens who behave great. I have high expectations for Tenleytown teens of all backgrounds and zero concern for how this would affect diversity in the neighborhood.

The community was strongly opposed to Chick-fil-A coming to Tenleytown, both because it's another fast food chain and because of the company's anti-LGBT politics.

I am not sure how people stretched the position on marriage to anti lgbt. They employ people regardless of orientation, they handed our sandwiches after Orlando. Personally, I think its great they take/give Sunday off

They will be obnoxious and disrespectful too. Go to a majority white northern Virginia high school at dismissal and observe.

I would raise the same issues if I were their neighbors.

there were also problems with them donating to groups that were anti-LGBQT, but they took specific measures to stop that funding and no longer fund those groups. not sure whatever other issues remain though.

To the poster who keeps bringing up the rock throwing incident -
This is obviously deplorable but hardly a regular thing. Maybe one group of kids did it once or twice if it actually happened.
Yes, they should be arrested but to act like this is what all Wilson kids do on a regular basis makes you seem incredibly biased in a negative way.
Time for you to move out of Tenley to Potomac or somewhere upperclass that is older and less crowded.
Yes, there are crimes sometimes. You need to be careful like anywhere in a metro area but nothing more. My 5th grader goes to Starbucks or WF after Janney occasionally by himself. He is not scared but you imply that grown adults are supposedly terrified of being there. Yes, I would prefer he not hear some of the profanity but it is what it is and he is not scarred or anything by it. Life goes on.

Er, no. People are concerned about the ones that are being crude and threatening kids. It doesn't matter if it's not a crime. Throwing rocks at people and yelling profanities with the goal of being disruptive is uncivil behavior.

"Threatening" is in the eye of the beholder. That is what seems to be at issue in this thread.

There was one reported rock throwing incident near Best Buy 9/1/2015 (at 6:00 pm, hours after school let out), and it keeps getting posted about here as if were were a daily concern. As for "threatening" -- like several PPs, I am in that area frequently with my younger children, and I do not feel threatened by the teenagers leaving school. Some of them can be annoying, but even the worst of the kids' cursing is not threatening to me. Terribly impolite, yes, but not threatening. So count me among the white, middle-aged women who disagree with OP based on my personal experience.

But if someone is throwing rocks at people or cars or property or is causing civil unrest for real or is yelling at you directly in a threatening manner, call the police ... they are less than a block away usually. We do need to get a handle on the real crime in the neighborhood.

NP. This does sound like you have low expectations for teen behavior, and do not want others to enforce rules of civil behavior. DC law is on your side, because there are no loitering laws that can be enforced by businesses. Loitering laws are racist, it has been decided.

I've seen it happen, so yes its happened. No one was arrested. Admonished yes, arrested no. Police are a deterrent in stepping in before things get out of hand. I am glad one was there to point them out to. They were in a little roll.

I work in the neighborhood and came out to find three Wilson students standing on my car.

Not the biggest deal and slinked off when mildly confronted, but can't blame any of our neighborhood businesses for implementing the policies mentioned above.

If you responded with "no big deal" I applaud you. Many a person would have escalated that incident physically instantly. Standing on somebody else's car is simply not acceptable by ANY stretch.

Funny how this thread has proven OP's original point. People are coming about this from different angles and different paradigms and the just like Sisyphus, the boulder keeps rolling back down the hill.

Amazing, these animals are so out of control that we are ok with a level of criminal activity that is less severe than assault and murder
Anonymous
The kids on the car were probably high. That is the real issue happening around Wilson - among kids of all races.
Anonymous
The issue is people keep saying no big deal. Is it the end of the world? No. But it is fair to stand up for civil behavior and push back on nuisance criminal activity. Please start reporting this stuff people.
Anonymous
Good call on the kids standing on the car being high. That is a big issue and very concerning at all the high schools these days (public and private).
