Tenley Chick Filet takes measures against loitering after school by students, including Wilson

Is Chick Filet anything like Chick Fil A or nah?

I live in Tenley and am in the area a lot when schools let out.
Yes, it gets crowded and some of the kids can be very obnoxious but I have
never felt threatened even slightly. Deal has over 1500 kids, Wilson has over 2000. Added to the mix are AU students, GDS, Janney, Sidwell, etc and it is bound to get crazy. If it bothers some of you people so much, simply avoid the area between 3.30-4.30 pm and you should be ok.
Or move to Bethesda or McLean. I hate the idea of shutting out all kids from other wards. DC is segregated enough already.
The last thing we need in Tenley is another mini Bethesda all-white downtown. The businesses are free to do what they want but they are thrilled to have business from the students and clearly were targeting them when they opened in the area.

Of course, the kids are loitering. It is annoying but that is what HS students do. We used to do the same in HS.
No one had much money so we would buy a drink or something cheap and then hang out at the closest deli to our HS for a couple of hours.
We would take up a bunch of tables and it annoyed the deli but they let us be. It is the cost of opening next to large high schools.
They were fine because the school kids we're not there at prime lunch or dinner time. Chill people. You were in high school once and probably did a few crazy things yourselves.

Nobody has suggested this. Neighbors and businesses would not like to be subjected to crime. It's Interesting that to you that seems to equate to being lily white?

Oh please. There is no objective data, or frankly, even anecdotal data, indicating that these Wilson and Deal kids are committing a significant number of crimes. Is there zero crime? Of course not. Is there reason for you to be terrified of crime? Absolutely not.

Go back and read this thread. People aren't concerned about crime. They are concerned, basically, about kids being kids. And that is ridiculous.

Can these kids behave better? Probably. Is it worth all the hand-wringing and garment-rending that is going on in this thread? Of course not.

The community was strongly opposed to Chick-fil-A coming to Tenleytown, both because it's another fast food chain and because of the company's anti-LGBT politics.

I have to say I am surprised with all the liberals eating there at all hours. The place is packed even when it isn't just after school.

My teen announced, after leaving Guapo's, that he will not be going there for this very reason.

Maybe Wilson students should be more aware of the company policies. I can imagine a student boycott.

Has chik fil A changed any of their policies?

I thought they had been responsive to criticism but am not sure.

Er, no. People are concerned about the ones that are being crude and threatening kids. It doesn't matter if it's not a crime. Throwing rocks at people and yelling profanities with the goal of being disruptive is uncivil behavior.

By behavioral norms I mean not shoplifting or attacking people in the street --things that go way beyond "kids will be kids'' the knee jerk defense. They should also have something to do/a place to go. It is fun to hang out with your friends. One doesn't always have a club, a job etc. Schedules vary. The school could look at this. They have a beautiful atrium. The idea of bringing food in and having kids hang there is a good one. AGAIN, the school and governing bodies need to be involved in this discussion and address the raised concerns.

Many privates stay open very late for just this reason. Wilson could provide homework help and study hall, open gym - it would be a win-win. Most privates are open till 6 pm, cafeteria or vending could be opened - $$$ stays at Wilson. GDS stays open even later.

For part of the day, it is quite serious. It makes me sad because I for one welcome OOB students in any DC school. I don't welcome horrifying behavior, and when adults give it a pass they are abdicating their role in helping children grow well. That is why the head in the sand is so irritating. They are really doing these kids a disservice, as well as the neighborhood.

fair enough, i am not disputing that there is an issue.

my point is simply, the DME's redrawing of boundaries and the increasing IB interest at pretty much every single Wilson feeder (including, albeit late to the party, Hardy MS), is going to guarantee that Wilson is at least 2/3 white and IB within a few years, maybe as few as 5 years. not saying that this is a good or a bad thing, just a sure thing. the process for this has been set in motion and will self-execute automatically over the coming years regardless of what OP or anyone else thinks or does or however many councilmembers or ANC members do or do not lift a finger. plus i heard that the wilson principal is cracking down on OOB with absences and behavioral issues, which will accelerate it (because siblings will also lose preferen in those cases).

again, not saying this is all good news. there is a social justice issue to be considered. but OP could chill out by keeping in mind the macro picture.

You are assuming that a majority white Wilson would be filled with less annoying teens.

They will be obnoxious and disrespectful too. Go to a majority white northern Virginia high school at dismissal and observe.

FYI - Wilson is open until 10 pm every night. The security guards are there until 10 and there is a lot of activity in the building.
It is not jail, however, so they don't actually force every kid to stay.
