There is no medical proof it's biological, vice mental.

Until there is, I'd like to opt-out my kids from all of it. Garza said we could. She was wrong (or lying).

Since when can parents not opt out of Family Life Education FLE)?

Parents can still opt out of FLES. The board was voting to move it to Health where there is no opt-out.

Yes, Garza sent out an email that parents can opt a student out of FLE. However the subject is now included in graded classes and supposedly we, as parents, are unable to opt out a student.

We were lied to by Garza. This was sneaky and underhanded.

Spare us and go homeschool your snowflakes, if you're so put out. Garza is doing a very good job. No other large school district in the country comes close to being as good as FCPS.

Must have been written by Karen Garza. Fcps is sinking like a stone.

Our schools are fantastic. Sorry you have your head up your ass.

Look at the budget...I guarantee you in 10 years FCPS (with its philosophical direction and budget issues) will slip in terms of national rankings. My kids will be out of school by then, but unfortunately that will still affect my property values. FCPS is not what it used to be.

+1 I agree. I hope we've really far away but the time this happens.

There is nothing normal about it.

It is normal like being left handed is normal, or like being violet eyed is normal. It isn't common, but for that person, it is normal.

is there a genetic test or DNA for trans and gay? Or is it found through mental health counseling and self reflection/?

Is there a genetic test for the cancer that I have, that my father, grandfather, and great grandfather had? No...but it is surely genetic. Is there a genetic test for familial high cholesterol / genetic risk of heart attack? No....

We know things are genetics looking at family histories, but we may not know the genes....and in some cases, we can discover the gene -- think BRCA. In 1980, we did not know the gene/did not have a genetic test. But it was genetic.

Now, if gay is genetic, it is likely that acceptance of homosexuality will mean more gay people are out of the closet, and will not marry opposite sex spouses, and not procreate, which should reduce the prevalence of homosexuality.

Oh, and FWIW I am strongly in favor of teaching children that the gender identity/orientation thoughts and questions are fine.

Right...the problem is not gender identity, but rather school funding.

No one wants to hear they are prejudiced but your strong objection to your kids learning about people who are different from them, who in no way affect or harm your kids or anyone else, proves you are.

To me, this is the crux of the problem.
Of course, an innocent child would never intentionally harm other kids. But treating transgender as if it is normal DOES affect everyone. To suggest that people should not have to accept certain things about themselves as unchangeable, and that this is a normal thought process, affects our entire society as we know it--and not in a positive way. Where will this kind of thinking end? We already have a woman claiming to be AA when she is white as snow. Next, will I be able to get facial whisker implants because I identify as a cat? Meanwhile, people in California seem to think that they should not have to vaccinate their children, even if it means putting others at risk.

What happened to social responsibility? Where has it gone?

I know I will get seriously flamed for this, but when I think of this issue, I cannot help but think of this prayer:

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

That is a great prayer. I say the same thing every time I see a bigoted, asshole comment like yours.

And, you think your comment demonstrates tolerance?

I feel sorry for you, PP. You are weak, and that is why you resort to bullying people whose views don't match yours.

There are none so intolerant as the intolerant left.

In 10 years, Fairfax likely will have more residents without kids living in multi-family housing paying taxes to help support the schools. The right-wing nutjobs who want to predict the county's demise because they don't like minorities and hate the fact that the county recognizes the rights of LGBT students can go live in their bunkers in western Loudoun or Montana, and no one will miss them.

+1. And it will require much courage, PP, to challenge and change the current left wing madness that is taking over society. But we must. We have no other choice if we are going to exist as a functioning society.

Repeat slowly after me: separation of church and state.

The right has no basis for any of their bullshit expect "the bible! The bible!"

Listen, you don't have to like it. But times are changing, with or without you. You chose to live in a very liberal area. There are other places you might fit in better, like the bible belt.

And calling a spade a spade doesn't make someone intolerant of your views. You are allowed to have you prejudiced and backwards viewpoints. We are allowed to disagree and call you out on them. I can't believe you expect to be intolerant of transgendered people (spare me the "I'm not intolerant!" - by supporting things that make them suffer more, you are extremely intolerant) but then expect people to accept your viewpoints quietly as a difference of opinion.

PPs, you have the right to believe and say whatever you want.

And other people have the right to call you out on being an asshat. I'm sorry, but only your right to freedom of speech is protected. You aren't afforded the right to have people be nice to you about it.

And as numerous people in this thread have told you: you do not have to send your kids to FCPS. That is your choice, so quit your whining. Homeschooling is a better choice for people who want to stick their fingers in their ears and pray we will revert to biblical times.
