How will this affect our property values?
Virginia School Board Votes to Teach Seventh Graders about ‘Gender Identity’ http://cnsnews.com/news/article/lauretta-brown/virginia-school-board-votes-teach-seventh-graders-about-gender-identity |
There are already about a dozen threads on this topic and no it will not affect property values either way. |
Probably positively, if at all. Liberals and progressives tend to be more affluent, and Fairfax County is distancing itself from the right-wing nut-jobs elsewhere in the state. |
The plan seems aggressive to me. You don't have to be a "right-wing nut-job" to be concerned. |
If they truly thought they were doing the right thing they would have been open and public throughout the process, would have incorporated parent input in developing the policy, and would not have sneaked things through the first week of summer vacation when most families were on their way out of town.
What a bunch of tyrants. |
They were open and they included parent input in developing the policy. They followed the same protocols as any other change. This was not done in secrecy nor was it done all of a sudden. It was done in accordance with established procedure. Next time volunteer to be on the Advisory Committee. |
Yep, I agree. |
You can always opt your kid out of this. I will bet many parents will....even some liberal ones. |
You are wrong. It was done deceitfully and purposefully to mislead parents. Did you receive the email from Garza right after they added transgendered as a protected class? The one that reassured parents that it was an absolute myth that anything was going to change with tue family life curriculum as it relates to this topic? That everything would stay the same and parents would be able to still opt out of anything controversial or which conflicted with their beliefs? Oh please. And right after that, about a month later, they present a revised family life curriculum which not inky added these topics but also proposed to move them out of the family life curriculum and an into other classes where the teachings would be part of the students' graded classes and coukd not be opted out of? They were deceictful and sneaky. It was done on purpose and without regard for parent input. They know it and you know it. |
i am sorry, but the facts do not support your view. I can see no matter what I say, it will not change your mind about what "happened". They were neither sneaky nor deceitful if you had been paying attention and aware. |
It was deceitful, particularly with regards to Garza.
She should have never sent the email she sent. If she wasn't purposefully deceiving parents, her email would have said the comolete opposite of what it did. She would have outlined the changes being worked on for the family life curriculum. She would have expressed in her email that these changes have been in the works for some time. She would have given a reasoning and a timeline for the changes and included the parent input timeline and deadline (Did ANYONE receive and official fcps deadline for input on these changes? I heard about it from news reports, not from fcps.) She would not have emailed that nothing was changing and opt out was going to stay in place unless she is A) completely oblivious to what is happening under her watch or B) She was deliberately being deceitful. |
Parents should not have to watch every minute of every school board meeting and work session to be informed of what is happening. SB pulled this a few years ago on a boundary study. It was casually mentioned in a work session several months before--but no one told the parents until the study started. This was a big change that was done without input. Or ignoring input. Which is worse? It was sneaky. It is clear why it was sneaky. |
I don't see it as a big deal. Any kid who has any awareness of pop culture already knows about it. |
Yes, parents SHOULD have to pay attention. It is not hard. You should not expect an FYI about every potential change when the info is publicly available. If you know these issues bother you so much, get off your ass and get involved.
To the initial question, it will probably help things if it does anything at all (most likely scenario is that it has no affect.) Liberals tend to opt for DC and MD over backwards VA so this is a plus. |
Arlington Co just passed the same measure as FCPS re: protecting the rights of transgender students with no fuss, and I'm sure there would have been a HUGE outcry if property owners in North Arlington thought their property values would be negatively impacted. There are other issues affecting the public schools that will tank the property values in Fairfax Co a lot faster than this. |
