Fairfax County School Board Votes to Teach 7th Graders about 'Gender Identy'

Anonymous
The initial proposal as presented online by fcps removed the ability to opt out of the transgendered curriculum.

They ended up keeping most of the opt out ability...for now.

It is not the job of schools to teach children about "evolving" sexuality. Period. Stick to the science of anatomical development and changes. The other stuff is not allropriate or necessary in pubkic schools.

And before you start chanting your mantra of "pearl clutchers" or "haters", you have no idea at all where I fall on the whole lgbt political spectrum.

Stick to the basic science. Not speculation. Not pop culture. Not what happens to be trendy at the moment, with almost no legitimate scientific research to back it up.

Public schools exist to educate all the children in history, math, language arts, arts and science. NOT to indoctrinate them based on what the flavor of the month happens to be.

There is nothing normal about it.

It is normal like being left handed is normal, or like being violet eyed is normal. It isn't common, but for that person, it is normal.

is there a genetic test or DNA for trans and gay? Or is it found through mental health counseling and self reflection/?

No DNA differences have been identified.

Yet.

There is some science that indicates a possible cause for transgender women that is relates to DNA. More study needs to be done as this a very new area of research.

http://www.rollingstone.com/culture/news/the-science-of-transgender-20140730

"Rather, a growing body of research is pointing to biological origins. The 2008 discovery by Australian researchers of a genetic variation in transgender women—their receptor gene for the sex hormone testosterone was longer, making it less efficient at communicating signals—set off speculation that insufficient uptake of male hormones in utero contributed to a "more feminised brain." And the brains of trans people do look different. Recent Spanish imaging studies have shown that the white matter of untreated trans men look much like those of biological males, and that the patterns of trans women's white matter fell about halfway between those of biological male and female control groups. But it's premature to draw conclusions from those studies, warns Olson, since "those parts of the brain are shaped by performance and experience," and so may be a product of nurture, not nature. And despite the big genetic finding, it's unclear what precise role genetics plays, since a recent survey of identical twins found that only in 20 percent of cases did both twins turn out transgender, despite having identical DNA."

Again, there is a similarity with handedness. There are identical twins where one is right handed and one is left handed, so with handedness genes play a role but there are other factors at play too.

So you get your science from Rolling Stone and you think we're nuts..... You're funny (in a sad kind of way)

I'm an MD. If a patient comes to me and says they're thinking they are the wrong sex, I'd refer them to a mental health professional. Do you think I should refer them to an OB/GYN?

There is no medical proof it's biological, vice mental.

Until there is, I'd like to opt-out my kids from all of it. Garza said we could. She was wrong (or lying).

It is wrong for schools to teach as fact controversial information that runs contrary to established science.

If anything, the curriculum should be taught as a disputed theory.

Since when can parents not opt out of Family Life Education FLE)?

And I don't see what the lie was. You can opt out. (Sadly, since school is clearly the only place that will dispute your BS.) What is the issue?

How dare you call other people's beliefs "prejudiced" just because they don't agree with you. I have to think you are 100% wrong in your "beliefs" (which is all they are) that transgenderism is normal, but I would never call you prejudiced.

A gullible Kool-aid drinker, perhaps, but never prejudice.

The only Kool aid drinkers are you Bible thumpers. Pot, meet kettle.

No one wants to hear they are prejudiced but your strong objection to your kids learning about people who are different from them, who in no way affect or harm your kids or anyone else, proves you are. So basically, transgender kids should have to continue to be shamed, bullied, and told they aren't normal just so your precious snowflake doesn't hear something you don't like because you are selfish and closed minded? Ooook. Please do everyone a favor and remove your doomed children from these tyrant schools before the normal rubs off on them.

Oh, please. Did you get your talking points from the DNC?

I have no problem with my kids learning about people who are "different." By definition, every single other living person on the planet is "different" from them.

There is no such thing as "transgendered" kids. There are troubled, hurt, abused, confused, etc kids who think (or whose distorted parents think, hello Angelina Jolie) that this is all novel, hip and fun and yet another way to make deviancy the norm, which is becoming nothing more than a game to some people. That is not a piece of educational knowledge I think my kids -- or yours either, for that matter -- need to be enlightened on.

Sorry, I gave you too much credit. No such things as Trans kids? You're a simple idiot and if that is what you teach your kids, a terribly misguided parent. Please take your snowflakes away. You should hide yourself from society.

Wow, there are a lot of hateful asshats on this board and I truly hope FCPS keeps making more "secret" decisions so you can cry and blather and look like a fool, and hopefully eventually pull your kids out of the school system before you bigots taint everyone.

Transgender kids aren't the problems, or the ones whose lives should be kept quiet, or the weird and abnormal ones. Your kids, solely based on your terrible upbringing of them, are the real issue. Congrats, you are the problem with fcps. Too bad we can't " secretly vote" you away too.

Not sure who "they" is but since you said it so snarky I assume you are athiest and would never believe the words of a he/they/she. Which is interesting since most trans hatred is religious based, but you're a special snowflake.

Yes, Garza sent out an email that parents can opt a student out of FLE. However the subject is now included in graded classes and supposedly we, as parents, are unable to opt out a student.

We were lied to by Garza. This was sneaky and underhanded.

Spare us and go homeschool your snowflakes, if you're so put out. Garza is doing a very good job. No other large school district in the country comes close to being as good as FCPS.

Must have been written by Karen Garza. Fcps is sinking like a stone.

Our schools are fantastic. Sorry you have your head up your ass.

Look at the budget...I guarantee you in 10 years FCPS (with its philosophical direction and budget issues) will slip in terms of national rankings. My kids will be out of school by then, but unfortunately that will still affect my property values. FCPS is not what it used to be.
