No one wants to hear they are prejudiced but your strong objection to your kids learning about people who are different from them, who in no way affect or harm your kids or anyone else, proves you are.

To me, this is the crux of the problem.
Of course, an innocent child would never intentionally harm other kids. But treating transgender as if it is normal DOES affect everyone. To suggest that people should not have to accept certain things about themselves as unchangeable, and that this is a normal thought process, affects our entire society as we know it--and not in a positive way. Where will this kind of thinking end? We already have a woman claiming to be AA when she is white as snow. Next, will I be able to get facial whisker implants because I identify as a cat? Meanwhile, people in California seem to think that they should not have to vaccinate their children, even if it means putting others at risk.

What happened to social responsibility? Where has it gone?

I know I will get seriously flamed for this, but when I think of this issue, I cannot help but think of this prayer:

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

+1. And it will require much courage, PP, to challenge and change the current left wing madness that is taking over society. But we must. We have no other choice if we are going to exist as a functioning society.

Repeat slowly after me: separation of church and state.

The right has no basis for any of their bullshit expect "the bible! The bible!"

Listen, you don't have to like it. But times are changing, with or without you. You chose to live in a very liberal area. There are other places you might fit in better, like the bible belt.

And calling a spade a spade doesn't make someone intolerant of your views. You are allowed to have you prejudiced and backwards viewpoints. We are allowed to disagree and call you out on them. I can't believe you expect to be intolerant of transgendered people (spare me the "I'm not intolerant!" - by supporting things that make them suffer more, you are extremely intolerant) but then expect people to accept your viewpoints quietly as a difference of opinion.

But you see, this is where you are oh, so wrong.

What makes my viewpoints "prejudiced and backwards," other than they are not the same as yours? Who died and put you in charge?

You, in my opinion, are nothing more than a lemming being led through the PC forest, dancing to every "TOLERATE THIS!!!" tune that comes along. Whatever story someone wants to present as normal, you will leap to accept, simply to remain on the PC bandwagon. You actually believe that because a girl/ woman says she "feels" like a boy/man/ chicken today, that makes it true! And we should all respond with rejoicing!!

You have totally lost control of your ability for rational thought, and you think MY views are backwards?

Your views are contradictory to science, common sense, and have no basis outside of the bible.

Your views hurt people, contribute to bullying, and seek to police people based on what makes you uncomfortable.

A child being transgender or gay does not hurt you. It does not cause bullying for your child. The opposite does, however.

What if it was decided that we won't teach about heterosexuality in school? That we will tell kids who were born in the correct body - shhh, don't talk about it, some parents think that isn't normal so we better vote on if you can be allowed to be you in school?

Tell me honestly, what harm comes to you or your child if they learn about the existence of gay or transgender people without learning anything negative about them?

And Google prejudice. Just because you don't want to be prejudiced, doesn't mean you aren't. You are choosing to marginalize a group of CHILDREN, in this case, because you are uncomfortable and unwilling to be responsible for teaching your children yourself what you believe to be true.

Fortunately, change is coming with or without your approval. You can roll with it, or you can let it steamroll you. I don't really care and clearly, neither does FCPS.

... who am I (or you) to tell someone what gender they feel inside, and truly, why would I care to do so?

I am in the business of live and let live.

You are in the business of being up in people's lives, which is funny since the right wing is usually of the mindset of "keep the government out of it" (unless it offends your delicate sensibilities, I suppose.)

WOW. This thread has gotten out of hand.

To the original topic, parents can opt out, and let this be a lesson to pay closer attention because like it or not they aren't going to make bug announcements.

And for people on either side you are not bound by any laws requiring your kids go to FCPS specifically. This is the risk of public schools and you'll have to make your choices knowing you may find things you don't agree with.

Who cares what someone "feels inside?" Feelings come and go like the summer wind.

No, I am in the business of protecting my children and others from this kind of distorted mental and emotional abuse being shoved at them from all directions from an idiotic society that impresses itself by posting rainbow flags on a facebook page.

Then public school in a liberal part of the country is probably not the best choice for you.

its getting ridiculous to assume this is about liberal vs. conservative. I'm a strong liberal and thoroughly understand the concerns across the board that transgender is mentally unsound. Whether it's organic in the brain or a result of the environment, it is pathological. Why would you expect a liberal to go along with that? What needs to happen is more research, but there has to be research dollars out there and scientific professionals vested enough to take it on. In the absence of that and a dearth of research, it is simply absurd to come out a present it as normal. And to children no less. Sorry, don't scapegoat lobs on this one. We, in large numbers, do not agree!

There is no medical proof it's biological, vice mental.

Until there is, I'd like to opt-out my kids from all of it. Garza said we could. She was wrong (or lying).

Since when can parents not opt out of Family Life Education FLE)?

Parents can still opt out of FLES. The board was voting to move it to Health where there is no opt-out.

Part of the issue was the Virginia Department of Education regulation re: what is in "health" (where there is no opt out) and what is in Family Life Education (FLE) (where there is an opt out). The Board voted on it (after making amendments, having a dialogue/debate, etc.) and it is done. So why is this thread so very, very long?

Thanks. Appreciate the offer of protection, but we kind of like living in Fairfax and sending our kids to excellent, progressive schools.

If you want to hunker down with your Bible, your 19th century primers and enough hate and prejudice to get through several harsh winters, go for it. Just leave the rest of us out of it.

These are some of the funniest, most ridiculous lines I have read in this discussion. It is contradictory to science and common sense to expect a person with certain genitalia to identify as that gender? Since when?
And news flash: people don't need to be taught about heterosexuality. It's in their DNA to be attracted to the opposite gender. That's how both you and I came to be here, on this planet, having this discussion.

Actually, my family includes gay members who toed the line and procreated because that was how it went at the time, but nice try!
