wow, nice behavior at at McDonalds in Baltimore County

"There have always been attacks and many times in our history they've been committed by white people against minorities. But for young girls to act like this ... I think our society and our country are falling apart."

This is such ass backwards logic. Centuries of white people doing it are okay. Two black chicks and the sky is falling!

I don't think the level of violence is justified by any means. If they truly were scared, they simply could have screamed for help or shoved Ms. Poli out and then sought help. They had better options. The violence they demonstrated was disgusting, especially once it became clear that Ms. Poli had no intentions of harming them and that there were bystanders who presumably could have helped if she had.

I'm only offering a possible alternative understanding of the situation, since the typical hand wringing about the downfall of society and description of the two attackers as "animals" is rarely productive and, oddly enough, a far more common reaction when the perpetrators of such attacks are people of color.

Can I say with any confidence that this assuredly the case? Absolutely not. But before we conclude that society is doomed and two young girls are animals undeserving of human consideration, maybe we should step back and try to understand what REALLY happened.

What REALLY happened is they were animals who beat a person beyond what the circumstances required. And make no mistake, the circumstances didn't require ANY violence.

You are an animal. The two girls were assuredly wrong and should be prosecuted. But they were young and stupid and wrong. They are not animals. You disgust me. Coward.

I would hardly call the attack viscous.

Vicious, maybe.

I spelled a word incorrectly. I must be wrong. Thanks for adding something substantive to the conversation.

NP here. Uh, yes. YOU disgust me. "Young and stupid" does not explain this behavior. My pre-school aged child knows not to hit people.
They are animals; they acted like animals. They are vile. They are trash. And, I hope they go away for as long as is allowable by law.

I hope someone shows them that video and how utterly disgusting they are and appear. They should be ashamed. They should feel ashamed. Sadly, I doubt they would.

Another new poster here. Completely agree. Young and stupid does not even begin to excuse extreme, horrifying acts of violence like this.

I don't even want to think about the McDonald's employees who stood there and laughed and taped the beating. It makes me imagine my daughter, grown-up, wandering into a public place and being attacked without anyone helping (oh, except for the elderly woman who got punched in the eye for her efforts).

PP here. YOU disgust ME. You are the worst type of excuser and an illiterate moron to boot. First, how am I an animal for expressing my opinion? Unlike these animals, I didn't resort to violence, never have, not at 14, not at 18, not now. Btw, one is legally an adult, so she's more than merely stupid and wrong. How am I a coward? You must not even know what that word means, which makes you illiterate.

Yes, but with people like the PP who called me a coward holding opinions like that and raising kids, I don't hold much hope for the future.

NP here - this same incident just happened at Whole Foods in Vienna today - 2 woman had a conflict with the parking spaced and one got out and pulled the other out with her hair and smashed her face into the window very violently.
Not to mention the one that did the beating had her child and mother in the car. That is just not normal behavior. The cops came but am not not sure what happened after.
Crazy ppl live in all areas.

What scares me is that it is becoming normal behavior. I think we are so poisoned by things like reality tv and video violence that the social boundaries just aren't there anymore.

Inquiring minds, or me, want to know what the race of the offender was?

I knew someone would blame John Smith and White Americans for for this attack. Don't blame 2 perfectly free women who had the choice and made the choice to almost kill a person. I'm surprised Al Sharpton isn't leading a march for these attackers because they were somehow "goaded" by the victim. Typical. This is how it works, whenever Blacks get caught in crime, reference slavery and then everyone feels guilty. How about the animals who robbed and killed Brian Betts or AU professor. This happens right in our back yard. End welfare now. Make them actually have to work and they'll have less children because like the rest of it they'll actually have to balance a budget and not be able to have 6 kids on the tax payers tab.

There is no link - my friend witnessed the whole thing today and showed up late to the Easter party bc she called the cops and had to wait to give a statement.

The attack in Baltimore, to me was a hate crime against a transgender person. No excuse about the horror of finding a man in the ladies room can justify the level of malevolence demonstrated by the perps in that video.

I think it says a great deal about our society that a couple of young girls are so freaked out and disgusted by a transgender person that they commit an act like this. Many otherwise normal people are not normal and rational when it come to gay/bi/transgender. Those girls treated that person like vermin, like something that needed to die, like something whose very existence is too offensive to be tolerated.

As a society we don't send the message that LGTB are human beings deserving of every courtesy and respect that others are entitled to.

I wonder if those girls were raised Christian. I am reminded of judge not.... don't cast the first stone.... and Jesus ministering to lepers and prostitutes. How those girls could think it's OK for them to be the judge and executioner of another person - for nothing more than being transgender - is beyond my comprehension.
